A River (Stevens) Runs Through It
June 17, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
To use a golf metaphor (it is, after all, US Open weekend), the San Antonio Missions "posted a score" early and let the field (that would be the RockHounds) chase it. The 'Hounds had plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not break through, and the "leader in the clubhouse" prevailed, 4-2. The Missions broke a six-game losing streak in the process and evened the five-game series at a game apiece.
River Stevens hit a two-run home run in the second inning, and that swing would stand up as the difference. After Nick Schulz opened the top of the second with a double into the left field corner, Stevens ripped a 2-0 pitch from RockHounds starter James Naile into the right field bullpen. While it was a "short porch" home run, Stevens' drive was a laser, hitting the main wall behind the 'Hounds bullpen.
San Antonio added two more runs in the third on two-out RBI hits from Jose Rondon (single) and Nick Torres (double).
The RockHounds got on the board when J. P. Sportman doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. There were still two men on base, but both were stranded at the end of the inning, and that would be a familiar theme for the night. While the 'Hounds out-hit San Antonio, 12-8, they also left 10 men on base and bounced into a pair of double plays.
The Missions also helped their own cause with several outstanding defensive efforts, none better than Taylor Lindsey's remarkable diving catch at first base on a line shot off Andy Paz's bat. The airborne grab denied a run (with a man at third and two out) and also ended the inning.
Four San Antonio relievers back starter Aaron Northcraft, with Jason Jester slamming the door in the ninth. The former Texas A&M star, who earned his eighth save in nine chances (he has saved eight of San Antonio's 20 wins), was named this week to the Texas League All-Star Game.
