A Pair of IronPigs Named 2013 All-Stars
July 3, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
A pair of IronPigs infielders enjoying standout seasons -- 3B Cody Asche and 2B Cesar Hernandez -- were chosen to participate in the 26th annual Triple-A All-Star Game to be played on July 17 at Aces Ballpark in Reno, Nev., the International League announced on Wednesday. The 2013 Triple-A All-Star Game will be nationally televised on the MLB Network, beginning at 9 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, July 17.
Asche, 23, is playing in just his second full season of professional baseball but has been among the IL's most consistent offensive and defensive weapons. He is hitting an impressive .323 since May 29, including a recent .400 binge in his last 11 games. Defensively, the sure-handed third baseman went a stretch of 27 games earlier this season without committing a single miscue. Remarkably, Asche entered the 2013 season having never played in Triple-A and with only 68 appearances at the Double-A ranks.
This marks Asche's second career All-Star nod following a Florida State League selection in 2012. He entered this season ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the system according to Baseball America after leading all Phillies Minor Leaguers in average (.324) and hits (168) in 2012.
Hernandez, 23, currently sits near or at the top of the IL leader board in various offensive categories, including triples (1st, 7) and stolen bases (3rd, 26). He has used an 11-for-18 hot streak at the plate over the last four games to bolster his batting average to .308 - 11th best in the IL. Earlier this season he got his first taste of the Major Leagues, appearing in nine games with the Phillies and batting .250 (7-for-28) with an RBI.
This is Hernandez's third career All-Star honor, following appearances in the Eastern League in 2012 and the New York-Penn League in 2010. Hernandez entered 2013 as the Phillies' No. 15 prospect in the organization according to Baseball America.
The remainder of the International League All-Star roster is attached.
Following last year's 3-0 loss in the Triple-A All-Star Game, the IL owns a slim 8-7 advantage in the fifteen years since the event changed to the current International League vs. Pacific Coast League format. The winning League this season will once again earn the right to have its champion play as the "home team" at the Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game which will take place Tuesday, September 17 at Coca-Cola Park.
Great seats are still available for all upcoming games, including the 2013 Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game, and can be purchased in-person at Coca-Cola Park (Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), by calling (610) 841-PIGS (7447) or online at ironpigsbaseball.com. Two brand-new seating areas, the "Hot Corner" and the "Bacon Strip" have been added to Coca-Cola Park this season, offering IronPigs fans the most unique and distinctive seating and hospitality areas in all of Minor League Baseball.
The 2013 IronPigs baseball season is presented by Capital BlueCross.
