Mercury Announce Television Partnership

Phoenix, AZ - The Phoenix Mercury announced today that they will have a total of nine games broadcast on television for the 2004 season, the Mercury Â’s eighth year in the WNBA. ArizonaÂ’s own locally owned TV station, KAZ-TV, will carry six games locally. KAZ-TV can be seen on channel 27 over the air and on cable channel 13. The three nationally televised games will be broadcasted on ABC, ESPN2, and the Oxygen network. All 34 regular-season games will be broadcast on ESPN 860 AM, the MercuryÂ’s flagship radio station.

The first Mercury broadcast on KAZ-TV will be Friday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m. when the Mercury host 2003 WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson and the Seattle Storm at America West Arena. The remaining games on KAZ-TV include the MercuryÂ’s June 24 home game vs. New York, the July 7 trip to Los Angeles, July 18 vs. Minnesota, September 1 at the 2003 defending World Champion Detroit Shock, and September 8 vs. the Los Angeles Sparks.

With significant regional coverage, KAZ-TV can be seen in Kingman, Prescott, Flagstaff, Yuma, Lake Havasu and throughout the entire Central and Northern Arizona Regions on cable channel 7.

The Phoenix MercuryÂ’s May 22 game at Connecticut will be nationally broadcasted on ABC. This game will be the first televised WNBA broadcast of the 2004 season for ABC and will mark the return of Diana Taurasi to Connecticut, where she led the Huskies to three consecutive NCAA National Championships. The second national TV broadcast for the Mercury will air on ESPN2 June 3 when the Mercury travel to Seattle to take on the Storm. The final nationally televised broadcast game for the Mercury will come on August 1 while the Mercury are in Washington to take on the Mystics, this game can be seen on Oxygen.

The August 1 game against the Mystics on Oxygen signals the last opportunity to watch Mercury Olympians Diana Taurasi (United States) and Penny Taylor (Australia) before they travel to Athens for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. The September 1 broadcast on KAZ-TV marks the return of the Olympians as they compete in their first game back when the Mercury travel to Detroit to take on the Shock.

The Mercury begin the 2004 season at home on Thursday, May 20, when they host the Sacramento Monarchs at 7 p.m. inside America West Arena. Mercury fans have the opportunity to see their favorite WNBA team in action through all 17 regular season home games this summer with the purchase of a full season ticket plan.
