Maine Celtics News Release
Portland, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, may have been short-handed, but put up a valiant effort against the top team in the conference, falling to the Westchester Knicks Thursday night, 113-107.
Maine (13-14) only had 8 players dressed for the game, due to injuries and Kadeem Allen being transferred to the Boston Celtics prior to the game. The Red Claws were led by Trey Davis with a career high 36 points, including 3-6 from downtown and a perfect 13-13 from the free throw line, to go with 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Devin Williams also recorded a career high with 30 points on 12-17 shooting and 14 rebounds. Daniel Dixon added 22 points for Maine, also a career high. Anthony Bennett recorded his 4th straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Westchester (21-10) was led by Isaiah Hicks with 23 points, Billy Garrett with 21 points, and Xavier Rathan-Mayes with 20 points and 11 boards.
The Red Claws started the game hot, with Davis leading the charge. Bennett's lay-up gave Maine a 10-6 lead and an early timeout for the Knicks. Xavier Rathan-Mays and the Knicks kept the pressure on - Rathan-Mays scored 14 points in the first half alone. Dixon heated up as well, and Maine took a 33-31 lead after 1.
In the 2nd, Westchester came out hot, with Knicks Two-Way Player Isaiah Hicks and Knicks assignee Damyean Dotson leading the offensive push. Davis continued to pace the short-handed Red Claws, scoring at will and getting to the line as well. Davis finished with 27 points in the first half, but Westchester out-scored Maine 38-26 in the 2nd quarter, taking a 69-59 halftime lead.
The second half started very slow for both teams. Williams paced the Red Claws offense, starting with a tip-in to open the scoring. Dixon and Williams used the inside and outside game to perfection. The Red Claws continued to cut into the lead, out-scoring Westchester 25-18 in the 3rd quarter. Dixon's late three made it an 87-84 game going into the 4th.
The Red Claws almost immediately tied the game in the 4th quarter when Bennett knocked in a three of his own. Westchester went on a quick 5-0 run to regain a 92-87 lead. Williams' turnaround got it back to 2 at 94-92, but the Red Claws would get no closer, as Rathan-Mayes and the Knicks hit crucial shots down the stretch. Maine wound up shooting 41.8% (38-91) from the floor, and 31.6% (12-38) from three-point range, while going 19-23 from the free throw line. Westchester shot 56.5% (48-85) from the field, 19% (4-21) from downtown, and 13-21 from the charity stripe.
