LINCOLN, Neb. - Lincoln Stars forward Gustaf Westlund has announced his commitment to Ohio State University, a NCAA Division I program in the Big Ten Conference (B1G).

"I really wanted to go to a school where I knew that opportunity [to play] was one of the main factors and where I felt a good connection to the staff," said Westlund. "When I went there for my visit, I just felt like this is a good place to be."

Westlund, 20, has tallied five goals and 11 assists for 16 points with one power play goal through 28 games with the Stars this season. The Stockholm, Sweden native owns four multi-point games this season, including his first career two-goal night on January 6 against Sioux City. Through 87 career USHL games, Westlund totalled 13 goals and 38 assists for 51 points with five power play goals, one game-winning goal and a +11 rating over two seasons. After his first season in the United States with The Gunnery Prep in 2015-16, the 6-foot-1, 171-pound forward was drafted 27th overall (2nd Round) by the Stars in the 2016 USHL Phase II Draft.

Ohio State University has steadily improved after the creation of Big Ten Conference hockey in 2013-14, most recently appearing in the 2017 NCAA Tournament following a 20-win season. The team is currently ranked sixth nationally and has made the NCAA Tournament seven times since 1997-98 including a NCAA Frozen Four appearance in 1998.

Westlund will join current teammate Collin Peters next season as well as alums Miguel Fidler and Tanner Laczynski. Four of the seven alums in the Big Ten Conference will be at Ohio State University.

"I think they're doing a great job. They're pretty high in the rankings right now, which is really good. Hopefully I can contribute to that. It'll be nice to have [Peters] there, but at the end of the day it's about my development. I do think having [Peters] there will be great."

Westlund becomes the third player this season to commit to a NCAA Division I program. Currently, 17 active Stars players are committed to a collegiate program.
