Ottawa 67's News Release
OTTAWA, ON - A third period comeback completed by a Lucas Peric goal pulled the Ottawa 67's away from the Barrie Colts in front of a national television audience.
They came back from being down 3-2, winning 4-3. It snapped a four-game losing streak for the Barber Poles, and was part of Sportsnet's Saturday Showcase CHL coverage.
The win is the 67's first one over Barrie this year, after a grueling five-game road trip came to an end earlier this week. The teams traded goals early in the contest, with the Colts striking first off a shot from the line that Ben Hawerchuk tipped in from the top of the goal crease at 13:48 of the first frame. But Ottawa had an answer before the buzzer sounded. The Barber Poles drew up a play off the draw, and Mathieu Foget one-timed a puck off a faceoff win by Austen Keating. It posted in past former 67's goaltender Leo Lazarev for a 1-1 tie.
With the score at 2-2, Barrie would take the lead late in the second period. Ryan Suzuki grabbed the puck at the attacking blue line and rifled a shot through Olivier Tremblay, giving the Colts their third lead of the hockey game. But the 67's put a stop to the Colts offence from that point on.
Tye Felhaber tied the game up 3-3 with 9:04 remaining in the game. He took a nifty feed from Nikita Okhotyuk and deposited a backhand past Lazarev. The winner came off the stick of an unlikely hero in the dying minutes of the game. Sam Bitten won a faceoff ahead to Mitchell Hoelscher, who found Lucas Peric in the right corner. Peric banked a shot off the skate of Lazarev and in on the short side for just the second goal of his OHL career.
The goal came at 17:58 of the third period, and stood as the game winner.
Head coach André Tourigny, on benchmark games, - "These types of games are usually our strength. When we went into Sault Ste. Marie, they had won eight or nine in a row, we had just got crunched and we arrived there and won. We had Sarnia, who won 15 in a row, and we won here at home against them. We are able to raise our game and play at the top level - now we have to do it consistently."
GAME NOTES: 67's F Graeme Clarke now has goals in four straight games after scoring to tie the game 2-2 in the second period today. The rookie now has nine goals on the season. It was a calendar month between goals for 67's F Tye Felhaber, but with today's goal he now has two goals in his last five games. Former 67 Leo Lazarev was in goal for Barrie, allowing four goals and stopping 31 shots in the loss. The 67's outshot the Colts 35-24, making this the second straight game Ottawa has registered 35 or more shots. They had 36 in Kingston this past week.
