Yard Goats Shutout Sea Dogs in Portland

Portland, ME- The Hartford Yard Goats shutout the Portland Sea Dogs 5-0 on Saturday night in front of 7,029 fans at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. The Yard Goats have won three in a row and nine of their last ten games to move in front of the Sea Dogs in the standings. Boston Red Sox lefty Roenis Elias started for the Sea Dogs on MLB rehab and allowed one run in 2.2 innings, a solo homer to Yard Goats third baseman Josh Fuentes. Elias was tagged with the loss. Hartford's Yency Almonte hurled seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and Josh Fuentes had a home run, triple, double, and drove in a pair of runs for the Yard Goats, who shutout the Sea Dogs for the second time in three games. The Yard Goats have won three of the first four games this weekend in Portland to win their fourth consecutive series.

The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game in the third inning on Josh Fuentes' leadoff home run off Red Sox southpaw Roenis Elias, pitching for the Sea Dogs on a Major League rehabilitation assignment while recovering from an oblique injury. Fuentes homered into the screen above the Maine Monster in left field, a blasted estimated to travel 4-2 feet. Elias allowed one run on one hit in 2.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout. He was called for two balks.

Yard Goats starter Yency Almonte was terrific and hurled seven scoreless innings, allowing just five singles, two walks and recorded seven strikeouts. The Miami, Florida native retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings and worked out of a first and third situation in the seventh. He struck out Danny Mars looking to end the seventh inning.

The Yard Goats added a run in the seventh inning off Teddy Stankiewicz to take a 2-0 lead. Max White reached on a one out triple and Josh Fuentes followed by tripling off the Maine Monster in left field, scoring White and giving the Yard Goats a 2-0 edge.

The Sea Dogs threatened with two runners on in both the seventh and eighth innings but could not score. Reliever D.J. Johnson worked out of eighth inning trouble. Hartford got some insurance and scored three times in the ninth inning to make it 5-0. Anthony Phillips and Brendon Rodgers had RBI singles in the ninth.

The Yard Goats will continue the road trip and wrap up the five-game in four day series against the Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. RHP Luis Niebla will pitch for the Yard Goats. The broadcast can be heard on AM 1410 WPOP or on iheart radio.
