Closely Contested Game Leads to Series Split

Kane County Cougars News Release

APPLETON, Wl. - In a game defined by early offense, the Kane County Cougars (2-2, 41-30) dropped an afternoon matinee at the hands of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (2-2, 28-44) by a 3-2 final. It was a fifth inning RBI sac-fly for Ryan Braun that provided the difference. The Cougars split the four-game series, halting their series win streak at three.

Early on, the Cougars ran into trouble with losing right-hander Ryan Atkinson (2-2) making his return to the ball club. In the second, Ronnie Gideon slugged his seventh homer of the season past the right field wall. Nathan Rodriguez and Gilbert Lara singled, and rehabbing big leaguer Jonathan Villar's sac-fly RBI made it 2-0 Wisconsin.

An early deficit did not deter the Cougars who tied up the game in the fourth inning. On a recent torrid stretch, Ben Deluzio rapped a single to start scoring on Luis Silverio's RBI triple. It was the third triple of the series for the Cougars.

Taking advantage of their rehabbing major leaguers, Wisconsin took back the lead in the fifth on Braun's sac-fly RBI. Over the past two games, Villar and Braun drove in six runs. That ended up being the go-ahead RBI.

Despite going seven innings on three earned in a quality start, Atkinson suffered the loss. Going five innings on just two runs, righty Braden Webb (3-5) took the win. And with four scoreless innings, perhaps the best pitching performance on the afternoon, righty Cameron Roegner (1) notched the save.

Monday the Cougars start an eight-game home stand with the Clinton LumberKings. First pitch is slated for 6:30 P.M. from Northwestern Medicine Field. On the mound, lefty Mack Lemieux (2-2, 5.02 ERA) duels Clinton's righty Robert Dugger (3-1, 2.45 ERA). For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com. ###
