Yard Goats Top First Place Curve in Altoona

Altoona, PA- The Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Altoona Curve by the score of 5-2 on Friday night at People's Natural Gas Field in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Yard Goats catcher Dom Nunez blasted a pair of solo home runs and Brian Mundell broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out 2 RBI single in the seventh inning as Hartford defeated the first place team in the Eastern League's Western Division. Nunez had the Yard Goats first multiple homer game since July 9, 2016 when Ashley Graeter went deep twice against Portland. The Yard Goats can win their first road series in more than a month (May 16-18) with a victory tomorrow night or Sunday afternoon. The start of the game was delated by 41 minutes due to rain.
The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game on Dom Nunez solo home run in the second inning off Altoona starter Austin Coley. The Hartford catcher would strike again in the sixth inning as he connected on his second of the game, both to right field, giving the Yard Goats a 2-0 lead.
Hartford starter and Rockies prospect Yency Almonte hurled five scoreless innings permitting only three singles and a walk. The hard throwing right-hander ran into problems in the sixth when Edwin Espinal collected a two run single tying the game at 2-2.
The Yard Goats rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to break the tie. Omar Carrizales led off with a walk and Max White reached on a fielder's choice grounder. Drew Weeks walked with two outs and a passed ball and stolen base put runners at second and third with two outs. Brian Mundell followed with a solid single to left field, scoring White and Weeks and putting the Yard Goats in front 4-2.
Hartford added a run in the eighth inning as Max White drew a bases loaded walk and Ashley Grater scored, making it 5-2 Yard Goats. Edison Frias pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the season. D.J. Johnson hurled two scoreless frames to register his second save of the season.
The Yard Goats continue a 3-game weekend series on Friday night at PNG Field in Altoona, Pennsylvania. RHP Konner Wade will pitch for the Yard Goats while RHP Tanner Anderson will pitch for Altoona. The broadcast can be heard on AM 1410 WPOP or on iheart radio.
