Miners Drop Series Opener at Traverse City

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners lost to the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park on Friday night by a final score of 16-0 in the series opener between the two teams.

After Miners starter Payton Lobdell (1-2) retired the side in order in the first inning, the Beach Bums batted around to score six runs in the bottom of the second, with the first seven batters reaching on base hits in the frame, to take a 6-0 lead after two innings. A two-run homer by Elijah Trail in the third inning made the score 8-0 in favor of the home team.

Traverse City starter Kramer Champlin (2-1) allowed two hits to the Miners in the first inning off the bats of Craig Massey and Billy Germaine, but settled down after that to pitch six shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Beach Bums added on to their lead with two runs in the fourth inning, one in the sixth and then five in the eighth for the final margin. Brooks Trujillo pitched the final six innings of the ballgame for Southern Illinois, which dropped their fourth game in a row in the defeat.

The Miners will look to even the series on Saturday night, when they face the Beach Bums again at 6:05 p.m. Ethan Gibbons will toe the rubber for Southern Illinois opposite Traverse City's Nate Abel.
