RockHounds Blank Missions in Monday Matinee

May 22, 2017 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

On Safety Awareness Day, with a stadium full of school kids in the house, the RockHounds made it as "easy as 1-2-3."

The 'Hounds scored three runs in the last of the first inning, and that was enough, thanks to a combined shutout from Brett Graves, Ben Bracewell and Jake Sanchez . The trio, backed by another outstanding defensive effort, scattered nine hits in the 3-0 win.

With the victory, the RockHounds have regained a share of first place in the Texas League South, joining the Missions at 24-20.

Brett Vertigan led off the first inning with a single and a steal of second base. Back-to-back one-out singles from Max Schrock and Tyler Marincov produced the game's first run, with Marincov collecting his 17th RBI in his last 20 games.

Yairo Munoz brought Schrock home for a 2-0 lead on a two-out single to left and Marincov scored when right fielder Franmil Reyes misplayed Andy Paz 's single to right.

Graves, making his fourth start since being promoted to the RockHounds from Class-A Advanced Stockton, pitched into the sixth, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out three (he has 13 K's and just two walks in four starts). Bracewell returned to his 2016 form, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced, as he struck out two over 2.1 innings and Sanchez closed the door in the ninth for his third save in as many chances, allowing one hit and striking out two. Sanchez, in his second appearance since coming off the disabled list after being struck by a line drive in the game versus the Missions on April 23, lowered his ERA to 1.13.

The RockHounds played errorless ball, highlighted by a brilliant double play beginning with a flip out of the glove from Schrock to Richie Martin on a ball hit up the middle in the fourth. Martin had earlier made a tremendous play on a ball hit to the edge of the outfield grass and in deep in the hole, taking a potential leadoff hit away from Nick Torres in the second inning.
