Round Rock Express News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Round Rock Express (11-13) struggled to keep the hot-hitting Memphis Redbirds (13-11) within the confines of AutoZone Park on Sunday afternoon, ultimately dropping an 11-7 contest.

Express starter RHP Dillon Gee (1-3, 5.19) suffered the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks in six innings. Gee struck out four and allowed a home run. On the winning side, Redbirds RHP Chris Ellis (1-3, 7.77) held the E-Train to four runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. Ellis recorded six punchouts in the win.

Round Rock CF Cesar Puello wasted no time putting the E-Train on the board. After a leadoff single by 3B Drew Robinson to open the game, Puello launched a 1-2 pitch onto the berm in left field, putting the Express up 2-0 before the Redbirds could even record an out.

Puello doubled the team's lead in the fourth inning. After striking out C Brett Hayes and RF Preston Beck, Ellis hit 2B Josh Wilson with a pitch. SS Luis Marte followed up with a single, then Robinson worked a walk to load the bases. Puello singled to send Wilson and Marte flying home, extending the Express lead to 4-0.

However, Memphis worked their way right back into the game over the next two innings. In the bottom of the fourth, DH Paul DeJong lined a solo home run to left field to put the Redbirds on the board.

One inning later, the home side stormed ahead by dropping a five-spot. 2B Breyvic Valera and RF Todd Cunningham opened the frame with back-to-back base hits. 1B Rangel Ravelo singled home Valera before 3B Patrick Wisdom singled to load the bases. A Harrison Bader knock and DeJong groundout scored two more runs to knot the game at four. The big blow came in the form of a Wilfredo Tovar double that sent Wisdom and Bader home to give the Redbirds their first lead of the day at 6-4.

The wheels fell off for Express RHP Tanner Scheppers in the seventh inning. The righty walked Ravelo to open the inning, then allowed three straight home runs to Wisdom, Bader and DeJong. The power surge extended Memphis' lead to 10-4.

In the eighth, RHP Anthony Bass emerged from the Express bullpen, surrendering back-to-back doubles to Ravelo and Wisdom to push the deficit to 11-4. E-Train CF Jared Hoying provided some late fireworks in the ninth. Puello opened the inning with a double, then 1B Ronald Guzman singled before Hoying connected for a three-run shot that cut the deficit to four. However, the Express couldn't overcome the gap, eventually falling by a final score of 11-7.

Round Rock and Memphis conclude their five-game set on Monday. E-Train RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1, 2.89) is slated to take the mound against Redbirds RHP Mike Mayers (1-2, 7.36). First pitch at AutoZone Park is set for 11:05 a.m. Round Rock returns home to Dell Diamond on Tuesday, May 2 to open an eight-game homestand.
