Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

A four-run third inning by the Toledo Mud Hens was too much to overcome as the Pigs fell 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Park.

Trailing 2-0, Toledo's Jacoby Jones singled home Brendan Ryan to put the Mud Hens on the board and began a four-run rally. Efrnen Navaro then knotted the game at 2 with an RBI double scoring Mud Hens outfielder Alex Presley. James Loney then sent a sacrifice fly to center, scoring JaCoby Jones to give Toledo a 3-2 lead. Bryan Holaday then capped off the four-run rally with an RBI single that scored Navarro, putting the Mud Hens on top 4-2 after three.

The Pigs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back walks to Roman Quinn and J.P. Crawford, and then Jorge Alfaro was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Dylan Cozens.

Cozens then sent a sacrifice fly to center scoring Quin to put the Pigs on the board early as they lead 1-0. Rhys Hoskins extended his team season-high 11 game hitting streak with an RBI single scoring Crawford that held Alfaro at second.

The base hit for Hoskins also extended his Minor League best 22 game on-base streak that began in the second game of the season for the 23-year-old.

J.P. Crawford inched the Pigs closer as he plated Taylor Featherston on an single to center to draw the Pigs within a run as they trailed 4-3. The 22-year-old short stop has now hit safely in his last five contests after struggling earlier in the season. Crawford, who was hitting .083 on April 22, is now batting .145 improving his batting average by .062 over the last seven games.

After a James Loney walk to begin the Mud Hens sixth, Jason Krizan tripled to center to score Loney to put Toledo up 5-3. Argenis Diaz then plated Krizan with a sacrifice fly to right to give the Mud Hens a 6-3 advantage after six.

The Pigs had their best chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the seventh as they had the bases loaded with just one out in the inning with the bash brothers of Cozens and Hoskins coming to bat.

Cozens would strike out and then Hoskins would follow with a fly out to right field to end the Pigs threat.

Nick Williams tried to kick start a late rally as he unloaded on a 3-2 pitch and deposited it over the right field wall for a solo home run, his second of the year, to draw the Pigs to within two as they trailed 6-4 after eight.

The Pigs could not get anything going in the ninth as Crawford, Alfaro and Cozens were retired in order to end the game as the Pigs fell 6-4 to the Mud Hens, losing their first series since the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders took two of three games in Moosic.

Pigs starter Ricardo Pinto found trouble in the third inning as he surrendered the four runs in the frame, as he tossed five innings picking up his second loss of the season.

Pat Venditte continued his strong start to the 2017 season as he pitched two scoreless innings, bringing his scoreless innings streak to 11 innings, and surrendered just his first hit of the year.

The Pigs will take an off day on Monday but will return to action at Coca-Cola Park as they welcome the RailRiders to town for a three game series. The Pigs will send right-hander Mark Appel(1-2, 6.11) to square off against RailRiders starter right-hander Luis Cessa (1-2, 1.54) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The homestand will be kicked off with a Nick Williams bobble head giveaway given to the first 3,000 fans 18 and older courtesy of Giant Food Stores.
