Max Schrock's two-run homer highlighted a pivotal eighth-inning rally as Midland defeated San Antonio 7-5 in front of a Saturday night crowd of 6,113 at Wolff Stadium. The RockHounds, as they did in Friday's series opener, got out to an early lead in the first. Brett Vertigan led off the game with a double to left center off San Antonio righty Michael Kelly. Next batter, B.J. Boyd, promptly drove in Vertigan with a single. Kelly shook off the early run to fan five over the first three innings. His offense knotted the score at one in the bottom of the third against Grant Holmes with the help of a hit and an error. With runners on first and second, Franmil Reyes hit a soft grounder towards third. Jordan Tarsovich fielded the ball but his ill-advised throw to first went past Viosergy Rosa, allowing Jose Rondon to score the tying run. Midland finally got to Kelly again in the fifth, retaking the lead at 3-1 courtesy of a sacrifice fly and an error. San Antonio answered with one of its own in the fifth against reliever James Naile on Nick Schulz's RBI double to center. Rafael De Paula took over for Kelly to start the sixth and his first pitch promptly gave the 'Hounds a 4-2 lead as Rosa took the reliever deep to right center. The Missions battled back again, tying the game at four in the seventh against Naile and Lou Trivino (2-0) on another Schulz RBI double and a Fernando Perez single up the middle. The comeback was quickly halted in the top of the eighth as Midland put together a game-winning rally against lefty Brad Wieck. Rosa led off the frame with a single. After Wieck (1-1) got Tyler Marincov to line out to short, Max Schrock took his first pitch over the wall in right. Midland tacked on another insurance run later in the frame. San Antonio got a league-leading seventh dinger from Nick Schulz in the ninth off Kyle Finnegan (4th save) but it was not enough. Schulz finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two walks. All three of his hits went for extra bases. San Antonio (9-13) resumes its four-game series with Midland (11-11) Sunday at 2:05 PM. Enyel De Los Santos (1-0, 2.75) will take the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Heath Fillmyer (0-2, 3.71).
