Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Charleston RiverDogs again eked out just enough offense to beat the struggling Delmarva Shorebirds, winning 4-1 on Saturday night at Perdue Stadium.

Nick Green (2-3) earned the win for the RiverDogs (13-11) with 6.2 innings of one-run, three hit ball, walking none and striking out six. Matthias Dietz (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Shorebirds (11-13) despite his finest pitching effort as a pro. Dietz allowed two runs on four hits in six innings, walking one, hitting one, and striking out three on 82 pitches. Anyelo Gomez notched the save for the second straight night, his fifth of the season.

After three scoreless innings to start, Charleston went on the attack in the one inning Dietz was off his mark. Diego Castillo drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the fourth, and Hoy Jun Park took a pitch in the thigh to put two on. After a Blake Rutherford Strikeout, both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Castillo came in to score on an Angel Aguilar sac fly to center. Brandon Wagner followed with an RBI base hit of his own, and the RiverDogs went up 2-0.

Two runs was more than enough for Green, who was practically unhittable in his first six innings. Green faced the minimum through six, giving up two singles that were promptly erased on double plays.

The Shorebirds finally got to Green in the seventh. Ryan McKenna led off with a double. After Jake Ring struck out, Chris Clare grounded out to short to move McKenna to third. After Collin Woody worked a full-count walk, Charleston went to the pen, summoning Garrett Mundell. Mundell's first high pitch to Cole Billingsley gave catcher Eduardo Navas trouble, and McKenna scampered home on the passed ball to cut the deficit in half. Mundell shook it off and proceded to strike out Billingsley on a full count.

Charleston bolstered the lead in the top of the eighth as Navas and Estevan Florial led off with back-to-back singles. After a Castillo sac bunt moved the runners up, Park hit a grounder to second. Alejandro Juvier, who was playing in, let the ball slide under his mitt and into right field. Both runners scored on the error and the RiverDogs had their three-run lead.

Delmarva could get nothing going against the RiverDog bullpen, as Mundell and Gomez got the final seven outs of the game via strikeout. Frank Crinella led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit before Gomez sat McKenna, Ring, and Clare down with a K.

McKenna went 1-for-4 with the double and run for the Shorebirds, scoring his league-leading 23rd run of the year. Ring, Woody, and Crinella had the other three hits for Delmarva.

Rutherford finished 2-for-4 for the RiverDogs, while Castillo went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Delmarva has struggled to score runs on this homestand, plating just 10 in their last six games (1.7 per game).

The Shorebirds wrap up the homestand on Sunday afternoon as Delmarva throws lefty Travis Seabrooke (1-1, 3.45) against Charleston right-hander Adonis Rosa (0-0, 2.87). First pitch is 2:05 p.m. with gates opening one hour prior. Sunday is Hit the Books Day, Strike Out Hunger Sunday, and Kids Run the Bases day presented by Chili's. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports AM 960 and the MiLB First Pitch app begins at 1:50 p.m. with Will DeBoer on the call.
