Knights Drop Game Two to Clippers 8-1

Columbus Hits Four Home Runs in Saturday's Regularly Scheduled Game

(COLUMBUS, OH) -- A five-run first inning helped lead the Columbus Clippers over the Charlotte Knights by a score of 8-1 on Saturday from Huntington Park in Columbus, OH. Despite dropping the originally scheduled game, the Knights earned a split of the doubleheader on Saturday. Charlotte won Friday's suspended game on Saturday by a score of 6-3.

Richie Shaffer, a product of Charlotte's Providence High School, launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Four batters later, Chris Colabello ripped a three-run home run. At that point, the Clippers possessed a 5-0 lead over the Knights in just the first frame.

Three innings later, Columbus added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Bradley Zimmer, Cleveland's top prospect. The home run was Zimmer's third of the season and that was enough to help the Clippers get past the Knights in the middle game of the three-game set.

RHP Chris Volstad (0-1, 8.22) started for the Knights and gave up six runs on nine hits over four innings and was saddled with the loss. Saturday's start was the second of the season for Volstad, who gave up a total of three home runs on the day. Reliever Giovanni Soto surrendered a solo home run to Erik Gonzalez in the fifth inning. It was the fourth of the season for Gonzalez. Soto pitched the final two innings for Charlotte.

Offensively for the Knights, Jose Vinicio led the way with three hits. He finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and a stolen base. Yoan Moncada had one hit and extended his hit streak to six consecutive games.

Columbus reliever Jeff Johnson (1-0, 3.00) earned the win out of the bullpen after two scoreless innings.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. RHP Reynaldo Lopez (1-1, 4.87) will get the start for the Knights in Sunday's finale against Columbus RHP Adam Plutko (0-3, 9.35). Pre-game radio coverage will begin at 1:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
