Drive Game Story (4/29): Shawaryn Shines in Drive Win on Saturday
April 30, 2017 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Strong starting pitching from the Greenville Drive has become the norm as of late, and Mike Shawaryn kept that going on Saturday night, holding the Augusta GreenJackets to one hit in six scoreless innings in a 4-1 Drive victory.
Shawaryn (2-1) didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, and he punched out five Augusta (10-13) hitters while issuing just two walks. Over his last four starts, Shawaryn has struck out 30 hitters over 21 1/3 innings while posting a 1.27 ERA in that span.
GreenJackets starter Caleb Baragar (0-2) matched Shawaryn for five innings until the Drive (15-8) struck for a pair of runs in the sixth. Santiago Espinal began the frame with an infield single, and after a single by Chris Madera, Jerry Downs hit a single of his own to plate Espinal and put the Drive up 1-0. A wild pitch later in the inning added another run.
Augusta threatened to tie the game in the eighth, as Ashford Fulmer drew a one-out walk and move to third on Sandro Fabian's double. Stephen Nogosek entered the game and allowed a sacrifice fly to Frandy De La Rosa to cut the Drive lead to 2-1, but a popout ended the threat.
Two more runs in the ninth gave the Drive some insurance. Espinal singled with one out and scored later in the inning on a balk, and Tyler Hill scooted home on a passed ball for another run.
Nogosek kept the GreenJackets off the board in the ninth to notch his seventh save of the year.
Espinal went 3-5 at the plate and scored a pair of runs to pace the Greenville offense, while Mitchell Gunsolus chipped in with two hits.
The Drive will go for a series victory on Sunday afternoon in Augusta at 2:05 PM. Left-hander Logan Boyd (3-0, 2.57) takes the hill for the Drive, and he will be opposed by GreenJackets right-hander Stephen Woods (1-1, 2.16).
