Error prone Mudcats swept in Saturday doubleheader
Three Carolina errors helped fuel seven Frederick runs in game two
FREDERICK, M.D. - Frederick's Yermin Mercedes hit a three-run home run and Stuart Levy drove in two as the Keys defeated the Mudcats 7-3 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Nymeo Field in Frederick.
Brad Kuntz started game two of Saturday's doubleheader for the Mudcats (9-13) and left during the third after the Keys (12-11) rallied for six runs on six hits against him.
Frederick's big third inning was helped in large part by Mercedes' home run, but also by two costly Carolina errors (committed by Wendell Rijo and Isan Diaz). The two errors helped account for half of the runs scored in the inning as only three of the six were earned run to Kuntz.
Kuntz (1-2, 4.38) also gave up an unearned run in the first after committing an error of his own on a come backer to the mound. His throwing error allowed the Keys to take an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Kuntz finished his start with seven runs allowed (three earned) on seven hits and struck out one while suffering the loss.
Jake Gatewood tied the game for the Mudcats with a solo home run to start the third and was 1-for-3 in game two. The home run was his third of the season and his second of the day. He also hit a home run in game one, with both going out to right. The homer also extended his hitting streak to nine straight games.
The game was tied 1-1 entering the third, but the Keys then went on to score six runs on Mercedes' homer and RBI hits from Ryan Mountcastle and Levy while taking a 7-1 lead.
It stayed 7-1 until the seventh and final frame when Luis Aviles hit a two-run home run off reliever Bobby Bundy. The home run was Aviles's second of the season and his second in Frederick against the Keys..
Bundy (1-0, 6.00) earned the win after pitching the final three innings for Frederick. He finished with two runs allowed on three hits and struck out two. Reid Love started for the Keys and worked through four innings with just one run allowed on three hits. Reid also struck out five and did not walk a Mudcats batter.
Wuilder Rodriguez followed Kuntz for Carolina and pitched well. He worked through the final three and a 1/3 in place of Kuntz and held the Keys scoreless while striking out five.
NOTES: Troy Stokes Jr. was held without a hit and snapped his hitting streak at 10 straight games... Isan Diaz was 1-for-3 and extended his current hitting streak to nine straight... The Mudcats were swept in Saturday's twin bill and fell into a 3-0 hole to the Keys in the series. The Mudcats are now 0-4 in doubleheaders this season. The Mudcats are also 0-3-2 over their five series.
