Lloyd's gem wasted as Frisco takes series Apr 28th 2017, 03:08

San Antonio could not hold onto a late lead in a disappointing 4-3 loss to Frisco Thursday night before 4,312 at Wolff Stadium.

Much of Thursday night belonged to Missions ace Kyle Lloyd, who was looking to bounce back from a tough start in Midland. The Sacramento, CA native came out dealing Thursday night, striking out five over the first three innings. Lloyd's only mistake early on came in the second when Jose Trevino followed a leadoff Eric Aguilera double with a single into right.

San Antonio answered right back in its half of the second against righty Collin Wiles with a River Stevens RBI double to right.

The Missions would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Franmil Reyes doubled, moved to third on a Fernando Perez single and came home on Nick Torres ' sacrifice fly to left.

Now with a lead, Lloyd continued to pile up the strikeout numbers, fanning a total of 11 through seven innings. Lloyd became the first Mission starter to begin an eighth inning, but his night quickly ended when he walked leadoff hitter Luis Mendez and surrendered a single to Scott Heineman . San Antonio went to the pen and called on fellow righty Cesar Vargas, who promptly loaded the bases when Isiah Kiner-Falefa laid down a bunt single.

That brought up Luke Tendler, who turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead with a single to right center. Frisco tacked on another following a Vargas wild pitch during the next at-bat.

San Antonio got one back in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Shane McCain on Franmil Reyes' fielder's choice. However, any hopes of a comeback of their own were dashed in then ninth when Clayton Cook (1st save) got Alberth Martinez to bounce into a game-ending double play.

Wiles (3-0) picked up the win with seven strong innings of two-run ball, during which he fanned five. Lloyd (2-3) was the hard-luck loser despite finishing just two shy of his career high in strikeouts.

San Antonio (9-11) continues its eight-game homestand Friday at 7:05 PM with the first of four against Midland. The first 2,000 fans to enter Wolff Stadium will receive a free Missions Replica Corey Kluber Home Jersey courtesy of McCombs Ford West. Jake Esch (0-0, 0.00) will get the ball for the Missions in the opener, while the 'Hounds will counter with fellow righty Corey Walter (2-0, 0.56).
