Shepherd's Homers Lead Lakeland over St. Lucie, 9-2

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Zac Shepherd hit two home runs to lead the Lakeland Flying Tigers to a 9-2 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday at First Data Field.

Shepherd's first homer, a solo shot in the third inning, broke a 2-2 tie and put the Flying Tigers ahead for good. In the third inning he launched a three-run homer with two outs that put Lakeland up 7-2.

The Flying Tigers scored seven of their nine runs on two-out hits.

The Mets offense was held in check by a trio of Flying Tigers pitchers. Starter Beau Burrows held the Mets to two runs over 5.2 innings. Relievers Drew Smith and Gerson Moreno combined for 3.2 hitless innings with four strikeouts.

Brandon Nimmo made a second straight MLB rehab start. He played all nine innings in center field and went 0 for 2 with two walks and a strikeout from the leadoff spot.

First baseman Patrick Mazeika recorded the Mets only extra base hit of the game, a RBI double in the second that cut the deficit to 2-1. Mazeika would score on Jeff Diehl's double play ball later in the inning to briefly tie the game.

The Flying Tigers pounded out 16 hits. Mets starter Nabil Crismatt allowed 11 of the hits and seven earned run in four innings. Reliever Kevin Canelon pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

The Mets (8-13) continue their home stand on Friday by starting a three-game series with the Clearwater Threshers (15-6) at First Data Field. It's Free T-Shirt Friday sponsored by Coca-Cola. The first 1,000 fans get a free Mets-themed shirt. Also, as part of Coca-Cola Customer Appreciation Night, fans who bring a Coke product (bottle, can or proof of purchase) get a free general admission ticket. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
