Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Barons starter Michael Kopech (1-1, 2.50), struck out eight Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp over six shutout innings for his first Barons and Double-A victory on Tuesday night.

Kopech allowed a lone fourth inning single over the course of his outing, but did not let any Jumbo Shrimp cross the plate. The right hander topped out at 101 mph and struck out the side in the third inning to help his cause.

The Barons took the lead in the fourth inning in support of Kopech, as manager Julio Vinas decided to put the game in motion. After C Alfredo Gonzalez put the Barons in the lead by reaching on a strikeout and wild pitch allowing Keon Barnum to score from third, Birmingham pulled off a double steal where Mason Robbins would put another run on the board to give Kopech a 2-0 lead.

After Kopech would put it in cruise control to get through six innings up 2-0, the Barons extended their lead after 3B Trey Michalczewski tripled to lead off the eighth and then scored on a Nick Basto RBI double.

The Jumbo Shrimp wouldn't go quietly, working a rally in the ninth against reliever El'Hajj Muhammad. Jacksonville scored two runs in the ninth to cut the lead to 3-2, but Muhammad worked his way out of a jam with a groundout to end the game.

Jake Peter led the way for the Barons offense with three hits in four at bats, while Will Lamb pitched 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Barons will conclude their series against the Jumbo Shrimp tomorrow morning in the second school day of the series. First pitch for the rubber match is set for 11:00 a.m. CT. RHP Thaddius Lowry (1-1, 7.47) is set to take the ball for Birmingham, while righty Chris Mazza (0-1, 2.37) will take the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp. Curt Bloom will bring you all the action on the iHeart Radio app, beginning with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show beginning at 10:50 a.m. CT.
