Park Homers as RiverDogs Edge Power

Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, W.V. - Second baseman Hoy Jun Park uncorked a solo home run in the first inning and Charleston retook the lead with a pair of doubles in the fourth as they edged the West Virginia Power, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park.

With the win, the RiverDogs (11-9) pull even with Columbia for third place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division standings, three games back on first-place Rome.

Park's fly to right field for his third of the year came with two outs to put the RiverDogs on top, but West Virginia would even the odds in the third with a sequence of small ball. Center fielder Sandy Santos reached on a leadoff walk and shortstop Stephen Alemais was hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out. After Ty Moore sacrificed both runners over, first baseman Carlos Munoz lofted a fly ball to left to score Santos and make it a 1-1 ballgame.

In the fourth, Isiah Gilliam and Eduardo Navas ripped back-to-back one out two-baggers to put Charleston back on top for good. It was the first RBI of the season for the RiverDogs catcher, Navas.

The RiverDogs added an insurance run in the eighth. After reliever Dylan Prohoroff walked the bases full with nobody out, Gilliam hit a fly ball to center to score Blake Rutherford and extend Charleston's lead to 3-1. Navas grounded into a double play to limit anything further for the RiverDogs.

Trevor Lane (4-0, 0.00) posted 3 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen to extend his scoreless streak to 13 1/3 to start the year with Charleston. The southpaw fanned three hitters while giving up three hits and a walk to pick up the victory.

Charleston starter Freicer Perez's command came and went, but the right-hander pitched around his five walks and two hit batsmen to finish allowing just one run on two hits across 4.2 innings, his longest outing of the season. The 6'8" hurler struck out three Power hitters in his fourth start of the season in a no-decision effort to lower his ERA to 5.79.

Luis Escobar (2-1, 3.22) pitched well for West Virginia, but took the loss. The Colombian right-hander struck out nine across 5 2/3 frames with two runs on six hits allowed.

Garrett Mundell faced the minimum in the ninth with a strikeout to garner his first save of the season.
