Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars came into Monday's game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium with the best record and the best team earned run average in the Midwest League this season. They still have both marks after a 5-1 victory over the Rattlers.

Kane County (12-6) broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jose Herrera started the inning with a double. Jasrado Chisholm followed with a triple to right-center and Herrera scored the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Luis Silverio hit a sacrifice fly to right to knock in Chisholm for a 2-0 lead.

Those were the only two runs allowed by Wisconsin starting pitcher Trey Supak. The right-hander set new single-game highs as a pro with six innings and eight strikeouts, but those two runs in the fifth would cost him.

Cougars starter Jon Duplantier pitched five scoreless innings, allowed three hits, and struck out eight to earn his first professional win. Duplantier has not allowed an earned run in 20-1/3 innings over four appearances this season. He has struck out 28 while walking four this season.

The Rattlers (9-9) took advantage of two Kane County errors in the bottom of the sixth after Duplantier left the game. Ryan Aguilar reached on an error to start the inning against Sam Lewis. Monte Harrison reached on an error with two outs. Ronnie Gideon knocked in Agular with an RBI single and Wisconsin was within a run. Lewis hit Trever Morrison to load the bases, but got a strikeout to end the frame.

Two walks and a single against reliever Daniel Brown in the top of the eighth inning loaded the bases for Kane County. Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson argued the second ball four and was ejected from the game. When play resumed, a passed ball allowed an insurance run to score and the Cougars had a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tucker Neuhaus doubled and Gideon drew a walk with one out. Tommy Eveld took over for Tyler Mark on the mound and got the final outs of the inning.

Kyle Smith cracked a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to account for the final runs of the game.

Eveld closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

Kane County is now 7-0 in games to open a series. The Rattlers are 2-5 in games to open a series.

Game two of the series is Tuesday night. Thomas Jankins (0-0, 2.81) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has named Sam McWilliams (2-0, 0.63) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.
