Sierra Does It All in Baby Cakes' Win

Moises Sierra slugged a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give the New Orleans Baby Cakes the lead, then made a running catch in right field in the seventh to take away extra bases and preserve the lead, as the 'Cakes went on to defeat the Omaha Storm Chasers, 4-1 on Monday night.

Sierra doubled in the second but was stranded in scoring position. With two on in the fourth, he sent a towering fly ball to left-center field which evaded the reach of Jorge Soler for his first home run of the season to snap a 1-1 tie. Sierra added a single in the sixth, but needing a triple for the cycle, grounded out in the eighth.

New Orleans jumped out to a quick lead in the first when Brandon Barnes roped a one-out single, stole second base, and scored on a double by Tomas Telis . It marked just the sixth time in 19 games the Baby Cakes have scored first, all resulting in victories.

The Storm Chasers took advantage of a leadoff walk by 'Cakes starter Scott Copeland in the fourth to even the score. Paulo Orlando scooted to third on a single by Ryan O'Hearn, and scored on Peter O'Brien's single.

But that was all the offense Omaha could muster against Copeland, who rebounded from allowing eight runs to Iowa in 1 1/3 innings last Wednesday to turn in a quality start. Copeland (2-2) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two.

Omaha left the bases loaded against Copeland in the first and against Raudel Lazo in the seventh, when Sierra's grab of a liner into the gap in right-center took away extra bases and at least one run from Billy Burns. Omaha then failed to score against Brandon Cunniff in the eighth despite loading the bases with no outs, and stranded 12 baserunners in all.

Brian Ellington worked a flawless ninth inning to secure his first save.

Jake Junis (1-1) was charged with four runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss, despite recording a season-high eight strikeouts.

The Baby Cakes wrap up the homestand and go after their first series win of the season in Tuesday's finale starting at 11 a.m.
