Southern League Pitcher and Player of the Week April 17-23

April 24, 2017 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

MAHLE (PNS) and VIDAL (JAX) SELECTED AS PITCHER/PLAYER OF WEEK

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 17 through 23. Righthander Tyler Mahle of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp second baseman David Vidal earned Player of the Week honors.

On August 14, 1970, Montgomery Rebels pitcher Charles "Chips" Swanson fired the first nine inning perfect game in Southern League history. Nearly 47 years later, on Saturday, April 22, Pensacola starting pitcher Tyler Mahle joined Swanson in perfection when he retired all 27 Mobile batters. Using 68 of his 88 pitches for strikes, the Westminster, California native fanned eight BayBears on the night. Mahle's masterpiece was the fourth perfect game overall in league history, with George Lauzerique and Chad Gaudin accomplishing the feat over seven innings. For good measure, Mahle began his week with a win over Jacksonville on April 17, totaling a league-high 15 strikeouts over the time period.

Over seven games, Jacksonville second baseman David Vidal was a quality producer at the plate en route to his first weekly honors. The Miami Dade College product either led or tied for the league lead with 11 hits, four extra-base hits, 17 total bases and three triples, while adding a .407 batting average, three runs, a homerun and five RBI. Hitting safely in each game played, Vidal's best night at the plate came on April 20 at Pensacola. The Puerto Rican went 2-for-3 with a run, a double, a homerun and two RBI. Vidal added three more multi-hit games over the week, accumulating a 1.058 OPS.
