Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The International League has named Gwinnett Braves' right-hander Lucas Sims as its Pitcher of the Week for April 17-23.

Sims, 22, went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER in 7.0 IP) in one start during the week, April 20 vs. Rochester. He allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out five in a 90-pitch, 59-strike outing to lead the G-Braves to a 3-0 victory over the Red Wings. Sims combined with three relievers on a four-hit shutout, Gwinnett's first of the season.

Sims is the 18th pitcher in Gwinnett's nine-year history to win the IL Pitcher of the Week award and the first since right-hander Williams Perez won it for May 2-8, 2016. Sims is the second G-Braves player to win an IL weekly award this season, joining outfielder Lane Adams, who was named the IL Batter of the Week for April 10-16.

The Atlanta Braves' first-round pick in 2012 out of Brookwood High School (Snellville, GA), Sims is the first Lawrenceville native to play for the hometown G-Braves. He is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA (5 ER in 16.2 IP) over three starts in his second season with the club. Sims currently ranks among IL pitching leaders in lowest opponent batting average (1st, .123), WHIP (2nd, 0.72), fewest baserunners per 9.0 IP for starters (2nd, 6.48) and wins (T-6th, 2).

The Gwinnett Braves (11-5, 1st in IL South) begin a seven-game, six-day road trip on Tuesday night in Rochester, NY. Game one of a three-game series vs. the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field begins at 6:35 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 6:05 p.m.

The G-Braves return to Coolray Field on Tuesday, May 2 with a 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Durham Bulls. For tickets, call 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
