Miners Sign Oakland University LHP

February 28, 2017 - Prospect League (Prospect)
West Virginia Miners News Release

Pitcher Austin Sherry of Oakland University has signed his contract to play with the West Virginia Miners for the 2017 Prospect League baseball season. His signing was announced by the Miners organization on the morning of February 28 as the 14th of the many individual contract signings expected to be periodically unveiled by the Beckley, WV based team over the next several months.

Sherry is currently a sophomore at Oakland, an NCAA D-I school located in Rochester, MI and is currently a member of the Horizon League. The 5-11, 165 pound left-hander, who won't turn 20 until St. Patrick's Day, had a successful collegiate debut season in 2016 as a freshman for the Golden Grizzlies, appearing in 11 games, all in relief, and posting a 3.00 earned run average. Opposing hitters only notched a .242 batting average versus Sherry, who stuck out 12 hitters versus only three walks in 9.0 innings of work.

The Westerville, OH resident was a coveted recruit for Oakland as he came out of high school ranked 102nd among the massive field of baseball recruits in the large state of Ohio. He was a two-year letter winner in baseball at Westerville Central High School, was first team All-District his junior season, and also an honor roll student all four years of high school.

His college signing was announced by Oakland University on November 25, 2014 and at the time of the announcement, his college coach John Musachio offered the following comments about Sherry: "A crafty left-handed pitcher who changes angles and speeds as well as any high school pitcher I have seen in a long time. Low-80's fastball that gets on hitters due to his deception. He has a very good feel for his breaking pitches and change up. Pitches with an edge."

The Prospect League is the premier collegiate wood bat summer baseball league in the Midwest. It has been operating in its current form since 2009 while serving the summer baseball needs of top collegiate players. The 2016 Prospect League title won by the Miners was the team's third league championship in the last five seasons.

Season-long box seats and other ticket packages for the West Virginia Miners are already on sale for the 2017 Prospect League season, which begins on May 30 while the Miners home opener will be on June 1 versus the Butler (PA) Blue Sox. Persons needing more information on the Miners can contact the team either by e-mail at mktgwvminers@frontier.com or by telephone at 304-252-7233.
