Week in Review

Welcome to the team

When Jason Kasdorf was recalled to the Rochester Americans late Saturday afternoon, the Jackals added Elmira Fire Department's Eddie Palmieri as the team's emergency backup goalie for their game against the Everblades Saturday night.

Earlier that afternoon, in the Battle of the Badges, Palmieri pitched a shutout against the Elmira Police Department, leading the Fire Department to a 5-0 victory.

Suspended game

The Jackals and Reading Royals began a game at First Arena on Friday, Feb. 17, but the game was not completed due to ice conditions. With 6:07 remaining in the first period a large chip in the ice surface halted play. Attempts to repair the surface could not be completed in a timely manner and the Rec Rink surface was not at an ECHL caliber level, so the game was suspended.

The remaining 46:07 will be completed Tuesday night at First Arena with the game picking up where it left off, with Reading leading the Jackals 2-0.

Ticket stubs from the game can be exchanged for a ticket to the make up game AND any future Jackals home game the remainder of the season. Turn the stub in for a ticket at the First Arena Box Office. Jackals season ticket holders tickets will be accepted at the make up game.

Home and Away

The Jackals have played more road games (31) and fewer home games (23) than every team in the ECHL heading into the week. That means over the final 18 games of the season, the Jackals have 13 home games and five road games remaining on their schedule.

The Jackals are winless in their last 11 road games, their longest drought of the season, falling to 3-23-4-1 away from First Arena. The winless over 11 games has tied the Indy Fuel for the longest winless streak on the road this season. In fact, the Jackals have lost eight straight road games on three separate occasions and have 52 goals for as opposed to 127 goals against in 31 road matches.

In 23 home games, the Jackals are 7-13-3-0, including points in back-to-back games (1-0-1-0), and have a -15 goal differential, with 65 goals for and 80 goals against. Despite playing eight fewer home games, the Jackals have scored 13 more goals on home ice.

At long last

By scoring the first goal Friday against Florida, the Jackals took their first lead since Feb. 4 against the Brampton Beast, a span of seven games. The lead broke a stretch of 476:42 consecutive minutes that they were either tied or trailing, including 13:53 from the Feb. 17 game against Reading that is currently suspended.

Game 52: Jackals fall in tight game against Alaska

The Alaska Aces scored a pair of power-play goals and a shorthanded goal to down the Jackals, 4-3, in their only match of the season Feb. 23 at First Arena.

Alaska opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first period on a wrist shot from Danny Moynihan from between the circles following a Jackals turnover. Tim Wallace increased the lead to 2-0 on a power-play goal 2:39 into the second period. From there the teams alternated goals the rest of the way. Justin Kea brought the Jackals within one on a breakaway goal at 5:54.

After an Alaska shorthanded goal at 10:30, Davis Vandane struck on a 5-on-3 power play just over a minute later to again make it a one goal game, 3-2. In the first Steven Tarasuk scored with the man advantage at 12:30, but again the Jackals answered with a Kenton Miller power-play goal. Despite a late flurry, the Jackals failed to tie the game, falling 4-3 to the Aces .

Game 53: Jackals end skid with solid 3-1 win over conference-leading Florida

Davis Vandane broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period and the Jackals defeated the Florida Everblades, 3-1, Feb. 24 at First Arena.

The Jackals opened their first lead since Feb. 4 11:49 into the first period on Matt Lane's 10th goal of the season. He passed the puck to Brycen Martin at the left circle then got a return pass in the slot and snapped home the goal to put Elmira up 1-0. Florida tied the game late in the second period on a deflection goal by Dalton Smith at 16:09.

The Jackals broke the tie 6:26 into the third period. Charlie Mosey fed Vandane in the offensive zone. Vandane had a lot of room and fired a shot past Anthony Peters to give the Jackals a 2-1 lead. Kenton Miller sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:02, giving the Jackals a 3-1 victory .

Game 54: Jackals force overtime, but lose to Everblades

Mike Ferrantino scored 2:03 into overtime and the Florida Everblades squeezed past the Jackals, 3-2, in overtime Feb. 25 at First Arena.

The Everblades opened an early 1-0 lead just 2:53 into the game on a Stephen MacAulay shot from the right wing circle. Elmira answered midway through the first, cashing in on a terrific rush. Kenton Miller passed to Casey Thrush at the left circle, where he quickly tapped it over to Brycen Martin joining the rush. Martin fired home his second goal of the season at 9:05 to even the score at one. Florida regained the lead 7:07 into the second period on a point shot from Kevin Raine following a Florida faceoff win.

The Jackals rallied in the third to force overtime. On just their second power play of the game, Miller snapped home a shot from the left circle, which was initially not called a goal, but the officials discussed at the next whistle and ruled the puck was in the net, tying the game at two. In overtime, Ferrantino made a strong move at the left circle to beat Andy Iles and win the game for the Everblades, 3-2.

Week Ahead

Game 55: Tue., Feb. 28 vs. Reading Royals, 7:05 p.m.

The Jackals and Reading Royals resume their suspended game from Friday, Feb. 17 on Tuesday night at First Arena. The game will resume with the Royals ahead 2-0 and 6:07 remaining in the first period. It is the ninth of 10 meetings in the DeMet's Candy Cup challenge, with Reading winning seven of the first eight.

After a three-game winning streak, which included two wins over the Jackals, Reading has dropped three in a row, falling to 31-20-1-2 on the season with a 4-6-0-0 record over their last 10 games. At 65 points, the Royals in fourth place in the tight North Division race, five points ahead of Wheeling for the final playoff spot in the division.

Robbie Czarnik (19g, 28a) and Chris McCarthy (19g, 28a) are tied for the team lead with 47 points, although McCarthy has done that in just 43 games as he is currently on recall in Lehigh Valley. Justin Crandall is right behind with 46 points (16g, 30a). Both Czarnik and Crandall lead the season series with Elmira with 13 points.

Dekanich is 14-10-1-1 with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage, including a shutout against the Jackals Feb. 19.

Game 56: Wed., Mar. 1 vs. Manchester Monarchs, 7:05 p.m.

The Manchester Monarchs return to Elmira for the first time since Christmas and the first of four times in March to face the Jackals Wednesday night at First Arena. It is the ninth of 14 head-to-head meetings between the clubs this season and the fourth played in Elmira. Manchester has wins in five of the eight previous matches.

Manchester's lead in the North Division has shrunk to just one point on the Brampton Beast, who also have a game in hand on the Monarchs, because of a 3-4-3-0 record over the last 10 games. They have lost six of their last seven games (1-4-2-0) since Feb. 12 and are 30-15-6-4 on the season.

They are in first because of their excellent home record (20-6-3-1), but they are just 10-9-3-3 away from SNHU Arena.

The Monarchs rank fourth in the league with 3.85 goals per game with Matt Leitner leading the way with 49 points (12g, 37a) in 44 games. Daniel Doremus is second with 40 points (8g, 32a) and Quentin Shore is third with 38 points (16g, 22a). Game 57: Fri., Mar. 3 at Norfolk Admirals, 7:30 p.m.

Game 58: Sat., Mar. 4 at Norfolk Admirals, 7:17 p.m.

The Jackals set sail on their penultimate road trip of the season as they visit the Norfolk Admirals for two games Friday and Saturday night in their second trip to Virginia this season. It is the first half of what will be two straight games against the Admirals, as the teams square off next week at First Arena for two more. The teams have played five times this season, with Norfolk winning three and the Jackals winning two.

The Admirals enter the week with five wins over their last 10 games (5-5-0-0) to move to 20-30-4-0 on the season. At 44 points, Norfolk has closed the gap to six points behind Atlanta, but remain in seventh place in the South Division. When the Jackals arrive for Friday's game at the Norfolk Scope, the Admirals will have been off since Feb. 25 while the Jackals will have already played the first two games of a four game in five night stretch.

The Admirals, who were in the cellar offensively the first few months of the season, have risen to 22nd in the league with 2.83 goals per game. T.J. Foster, acquired from Orlando, has helped boost their offense with 33 points (14g, 19a) in 32 games with Norfolk. Overall he has 38 points (16g, 22a) in 44 games between the Admirals and Solar Bears. John Dunbar is second with 31 points (14g, 17a) in 44 games.
