Comets Win Streak Snapped in Milwaukee

KANSAS CITY (Feb. 18, 2017) - The Kansas City Comets longest winning streak of the season was snapped at nine-games on Saturday night as they fell 7-5 to the Milwaukee Wave. Defender Brian Harris scored two goals to lead the way for the Comets, but they were unable to come back from a two-goal halftime deficit.
With tonight's game kicking off less than 24 hours after a home victory against the Harrisburg Heat, the Comets only dressed 13 players for the game. Forward Leo Gibson and midfielder Bryan Perez each remained home to recover from injuries.
The Comets opening strategy was to play back in their defensive half and let the play develop in front of them. They had confidence in being able to force Milwaukee into mistakes and capitalize with quick counter attacks. They turned that strategy into four first quarter shots and a Lucas Rodriguez goal.
Unfortunately for Kansas City, Milwaukee got a couple bounces their way. First, a shot from the Wave's Edder Nelson got caught up between the feet of Comets defender John Sosa and accidentally knocked into the net. Then moments later, Ricardinho took a shot that bounced off the crossbar and just over the goal line, putting the Wave up 2-1 after the first quarter.
Guerrero Pino only needed 42 seconds of the second quarter to tie the game, followed a few minutes later by a score from fellow rookie Ignacio 'Nacho' Flores.
The Comets 3-2 lead held up until the final minutes of the quarter when Milwaukee scored a flurry of goals from Hans Denissen, Max Ferdinand and Ian Bennett. Suddenly Kansas City found themselves down 5-3 as they went to the halftime break.
After halftime, Harris was able to bring the Comets to within a goal of the Wave twice, but each time Milwaukee found a score moments later. The final one coming from Bennett with 17 seconds remaining in the game.
The loss drops the Comets' record to 14-5, but they still hold a one-game lead on Wave. Kansas City can still win the Central Division with a win over the Cedar Rapids Rampage at home next Sunday or with a Milwaukee Wave loss to the Chicago Mustangs on Sunday, March 5th.
