Ontario Reign News Release

Ontario, CA - Jonny Brodzinski scored the lone marker in a shootout, Jack Campbell made 30 saves and the Ontario Reign (21-9-6-0) beat the San Diego Gulls (18-12-2-2), 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Campbell was solid throughout, but especially effective in the shootout where he denied all three shots faced to preserve the win for Ontario. With the victory, the Reign snapped the Gulls' five-game winning streak.

"I think we've come out as a team and played really well back to back," said Campbell after the game. "We're all in pretty good shape and I think it's showing."

San Diego controlled much of the first period, scoring first on an unassisted goal from forward Zac Larraza at 17:14 before the Reign responded with a goal of their own at 18:57. Forward Mike Amadio sent a crisp pass to Brodzinski who slapped a rolling puck past netminder Kevin Boyle for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. The Gulls recorded 14 shots on Campbell in the first 20 minutes of action. Ontario was effective on the penalty kill, canceling all three of San Diego's power plays.

Forward Patrick Bjorkstrand gave the Reign their first lead of the contest with his fourth goal of the season, beating a stick-less Boyle to make it 2-1 at 9:57 of the second period. Forward Sam Herr and newcomer Cam Schilling grabbed the assists.

"It was obviously a great win tonight. I'm excited to be on a winning team, coming from Rockford where they've been struggling there for a while," said Schilling, who got his first point in his Reign debut.

"I just overall got great impressions [of the team] and everyone is really nice. These guys seem like a great group and the coaching staff seems unbelievable so from the amount of time I've been here it's been great."

Campbell was sharp the rest of the middle frame to preserve the lead. Reign forward Teddy Purcell had a golden opportunity at the 11:30 mark, but it was tipped away by forward Antoine Laganiere.

The Reign netminder remained sharp in the third, coming away with big stops, especially after forward Justin Auger was called for holding at 11:15. The Gulls made a push for the equalizer and pulled Boyle with less than two minutes remaining for the extra attacker. It was Corey Tropp who would score, burying a shot past Campbell after a drive from the slot went off defenseman Paul LaDue's stick.

The game headed into shootout after both teams could not produce a tally in overtime and Brodzinski scored the eventual game winner after Campbell denied all three shots.

The Reign close a three-game homestand on Wednesday, February 25 against the Bakersfield Condors at 7:00 p.m. at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Grab a ticket, hot dog and soda for as little as $25 with NO FEES! Grab a Reign Power Play Pack!
