Royals Beat Thunder on Power Play Goal in Overtime, 2-1

January 21, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (---------win, 22-13-1-146) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, defeated the Adirondack Thunder (otl, 17-12-4-341), 2-1, at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.

In the first game of the second half of the 2016-17 regular season, Reading struck first but needed a dramatic power play goal from defenseman Jesper Pettersson in overtime to claim the team' fourth win in five games against the Thunder (4-1-0-0). The victory, which pushed the Royals' record to a season best nine games over .500, was the first overtime win on home ice since May 18, 2013 (when Nikita Kashirsky scored the OT GWG in Game One of the Kelly Cup Championship Finals against the Stockton Thunder) for Reading, who has gone 11-2-0-0 in the last thirteen games played at Santander Arena.

Reading struck first 6:37 into the contest when defenseman Reece Willcox, who was assigned by the Flyers from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League today and was playing in his first game as a Royal, bagged his first shot for the team. Matt Wilkins, who had been rejected on his own scoring bid moments prior, tracked the puck below the goal line in Adirondack's end and slipped it back up to the top of the right circle where Willcox settled and ripped a bullet across the body of goaltender Drew Fielding that just caught the upper left corner of the net.

3:20 after that, Adirondack notched the game-tying goal when Brett Pollock was allowed to carry the puck from one side of the ice to the other-looping and arcing from deep in the right circle across the top of the slot and into the left circle where he uncorked a snapper that went across the body of goaltender Martin Ouellette and into the net for his eighth of the season.

From that point forward, this was an entertaining high-energy, back-and-forth, punch-and-counter-punch (literally and figuratively) open throttle affair punctuated from time-to-time by great saves at both ends of the ice.

The Royals got the team's first power play chance of the game with 45.5 seconds left in regulation, and although Reading was unable to end things in regulation time, 1:13 into OT, Pettersson put an exclamation point on this one when he got a quality look from just inside the top of the right circle. Pettersson didn't waste the chance ripping a hard blast that blew through Fielding's stick and into the low left corner for Pettersson's second goal of the year-both of which have proven to be late tie-breaking game winners.
