MALLARDS NOTES

Last Game

Garrett Ladd and Shawn Bates provided a goal and an assist apiece and Wes Cunningham scored what proved to be the game winner as the Tulsa Oilers defeated the undermanned host Mallards 5-3 Monday. The Mallards fell despite getting two goals from Nolan LaPorte, who also had a potential equalizer disallowed at 10:32 of the third period when referee Jonathan Sitarski ruled the Mallards' Brady Brassart prevented Tulsa goaltender Jamie Phillips from attempting to stop LaPorte's shot in the crease. In the wake of that decision, the Oilers kept hold of a 4-3 lead and eventually clinched victory with Bates' last minute empty-netter.

Coaching Change

Phil Axtell today was named Mallards interim head coach after Terry Ruskowski was relieved of his duties as head coach and general manager. Axtell had served as a Mallards assistant coach the last three years.

Triple Play

The Mallards tonight play the first of three games in as many days against the Mavericks. The Mallards will visit Missouri for games Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m.

Dip

The Mallards fell Monday after ending a team-record setting six-game losing streak in their prior game- a 4-3 win over Fort Wayne Saturday- and have now lost seven of their last eight games.

Short

The Mallards Monday dressed just 16 players- instead of the normal 18- due to injuries and call-ups. The man-power shortage grew worse after Jack Nevins was assessed a game misconduct in the third period Monday, leaving the Mallards with 15 players for the final ten minutes and 31 seconds. The Mallards have now played short in each of their last five games. They had just 17 players available for their four games before Monday.

Third

The Mallards have been outscored 15-3 in the third period over their last seven games.

First

The Mallards have given up the first goal in 14 of their last 17 games.

Home Sweet Home

The Mallards tonight close a four-game homestand. They have gone 1-2-0 over the first three games of that homestand.

On the Road

The Mallards have lost three straight away games but still boast a better record on the road (11-8-0) than at home (8-8-2).

In the Red

The Mallards are three games over .500 despite having been outscored 113-107 on the season.

Red Light District

The Mallards rank ninth in the ECHL in goals against per game (3.1). They rank twenty-first in the ECHL in goal scoring (2.9 per game).

Welcome Back

LaPorte has recorded four points (two goals and two assists) in two games since returning to the lineup after missing three games with a lower body injury.

Brady's Bunch

Brady Brassart picked up two assists Monday and now has nine points (two goals and seven assists) in his last nine games.

First

Ned Lukacevic scored his first Mallard goal Monday.

Top Dog

Justin Kovacs has moved past the injured Sam Warning into sole possession of the team lead in points (28) by notching points in each of his last three games (one goal and two assists). Warning, who has 27 points, has missed the Mallards' last three games.

On the Plus Side

Kevin Gibson is tied for sixth in the ECHL in plus/minus rating (+18).

Between the Pipes

Goaltender C.J. Motte made ten saves and allowed four goals in 25 minutes and earned the win in the All-Stars' 8-7 defeat of the host Adirondack Thunder Wednesday in the ECHL All-Star Game. Motte is tied for fourth in the ECHL save percentage (.925), ranks seventh in goals against average (2.48) and is tied for ninth in wins (11).

Milestones

Mike Wilson has 198 career regular season assists...Sam Warning has played 99 career games.

Power Play

The Mallards have converted just one of their last 27 power plays. The Mallards rank twenty-second in the ECHL on the power play (13.2 percent).

Penalty Kill

LaPorte scored his team-leading second shorthanded goal of the season on Monday. The Mallards have scored a total of four shorthanded goals. The Mallards rank twelfth in the league in penalty killing (83.6 percent).

Head-to-Head

The Mallards and Mavericks meet three times in 48 hours this weekend. The Mallards have won two of their first three clashes with the Mavs this season. The home team has won each of those three games. A 3-2 New Year's Eve defeat in Missouri started the Mallards' 1-7-0 skid. It was against the Mavericks one night earlier on home ice that the Mallards had last won before securing last Saturday's streak-stopper against Fort Wayne. The Mallards and Mavs will meet a total of ten times. All-time, the Mallards have gone 25-29-7 against the Mavericks: 11-11-5 at home and 14-18-2 on the road.
