So Far Against Sioux Falls

This Friday and Saturday, the Black Hawks square off against the Sioux Falls Stampede at Young Arena. The teams have already met three times in 2016/17, with each contest to this point in South Dakota. Games between the Hawks and Stampede have been notable for their high scores. The teams have combined for 27 goals, an average of nine per meeting. That includes the most scoring-packed game in the USHL this season, a 9-5 Black Hawks win on October 15th. Waterloo's nine-goal effort that night is the Hawks' offensive high water mark for the season. Meanwhile, Sioux Falls' 6-0 win against Waterloo just prior to Christmas equals the largest unfavorable margin the Hawks have allowed in 2016/17.

Staying Home

This weekend's contests versus the Stampede are the second and third games of Waterloo's longest home stand of the season. Sunday's 4-2 Hawks win against the Des Moines Buccaneers was the first of five straight at Young Arena. From a wider perspective, the Des Moines affair opened a sequence eight of 10 matchups in Waterloo. The last time the Black Hawks played five consecutive home games was at the conclusion of the 2014/15 season. Despite then being out of postseason contention, the Hawks won all five of those matchups.

Trying for the Top Ten

Nick Swaney scored his 14th goal of the season Sunday. He is currently tied for ninth in USHL goal-scoring this season. He is also tied on Waterloo's career goals list; the Minnesota-Duluth recruit is on even terms with Todd Turcotte at 54 regular season tallies during the league's junior era, which began in 1979/80. The two are tied for 11th in modern Black Hawks history. One more goal would tie Swaney for ninth with Mike Duffey and Scott Johnson. With three goals, Swaney would equal Joe Pavelski for eighth.

Conservative Numbers

The Black Hawks have not scored goals as readily at Young Arena when compared with matchups at opposing venues. Nor has Waterloo allowed opponents to score as often. The Hawks accumulate 2.6 goals per night at home, versus 2.9 in a typical away contest. Meanwhile, visiting teams have been held to just two goals per game when coming to Waterloo; those same clubs average 3.5 per affair when they host the Hawks.

Weekly Recap

Kevin Charyszyn scored the decisive goal in overtime Friday to lift the Black Hawks to a 2-1 road win against the Omaha Lancers. The following night in Dubuque, Charyszyn scored again, but Waterloo suffered a 6-1 setback to the Fighting Saints. Playing for the third time in three days, the Hawks scored twice in the first 5:10 and led to the final horn in a 4-2 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers.
