IceDogs Earn Point in OT Loss

The Niagara IceDogs played host to the Mississauga Steelheads on Saturday night at the Meridian Centre for the second of six matches between the teams this season.

The first period was a battle between the pipes as neither team could solve the opposing netminder.

The chemistry between Johnny Corneil, Ben Jones and Chris Paquette hit an all time high at 4:18 of the second period. Taking the meaning of a tic-tac-toe play to the next level, the IceDogs top line undressed the Steelheads defense before Corneil finished off the play for his 9th goal of the season to put the IceDogs up 1-0. Five minutes later, rookie phenom Akil Thomas used his patented release on the power play to beat the Steelheads goaltender over the glove and extend the IceDogs lead to 2-0. Ryan Mantha and Drew Hunter added assists on Thomas' 11th of the season. The Steelheads managed to put one behind Stephen Dhillon late in the period to pull within 1. Through 40 minutes, the IceDogs held on to a 2-1 lead.

With a minute remaining in the third period, the Steelheads evened the score with their own net empty to force overtime. Thirty seconds into overtime, Mississauga scored the game winning goal on a breakaway to win the game by a score of 3-2.

The IceDogs are off until next Friday as they hit the road to take on the Oshawa Generals. Returning home on Saturday, December 17th, the IceDogs welcome the Windsor Spitfires to town for the annual Christmas game.
