 Idaho Steelheads

Game Day Storylines- at Colorado

December 10, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Steel Reel

The Steelheads will look to avoid the series sweep on Saturday night and keep pace in the Mountain Division when they wrap up their trip to Colorado. With two straight wins, the Eagles have taken sole possession of first place in the division, while a shootout win for the Aces on Friday night pushed them into a tie with the Steelheads for second place. Idaho has not been swept in a three-game series since losing three to the Atlanta Gladiators in early November last season.

Goaltenders Branden Komm and Clarke Saunders locked horns in an entertaining goaltending duel Friday night, Komm making 30 saves while Saunders stopped 33 attempts. With the teams tied 1-1 late in the third period, Jackson Houck scored his third goal of the season off of a Darryl Bootland feed to give Colorado the lead for good, extending their winning streak to three games.

Bounce Back...

The Steelheads' defeat Friday night was just the second time this season that they lost consecutive games in regulation, the only other occurrence coming in the first two games of the season. The Steelheads are now 5-2-0 this season in games following regulation losses and 6-3-0 following all losses. The calendar may be on Idaho's side Saturday night, with the Steelheads 6-1-1 on Saturday nights and winners in six straight series-capping contests.

Nice Return...

Steelheads captain Jefferson Dahl wasted little time in getting into the action Friday night in his first game back from a two-game absence. Dahl snuck behind the Colorado defense with 5:37 left in the first period for a breakaway goal, his eighth of the season to tie him for the team-lead. That was one of five shots on goal that Dahl had in the first period. Dahl leads the Steelheads with 24 points in 21 games, tying him for 13th in the league scoring race.

Block Party...

In addition to stellar goaltending, Friday's game was a shot-blocking clinic for both teams, a key reason why two of the top five power plays in the league were held scoreless on four attempts. Leading the way in that department for Idaho was Corbin Baldwin, once again. Baldwin also added an assist in the first period, but was most noticeable in his own zone where he was solid in keeping goal-scorer Jesse Mychan and speedster Luke Salazar off the score sheet with strong positioning and a long reach.

Pacing Pierro-Zabotel...

Casey Pierro-Zabotel continues to put up points, and at Idaho's expense. The league's fourth-ranked scorer had the tying goal for Colorado last night just 25 seconds into the second period. Pierro-Zabotel has a goal and four assists in four games against the Steelheads this year, and four goals and six points in his last three outings.
