Hurricanes Set Up for Another Slam Dunk Year

December 8, 2016 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Halifax Hurricanes News Release

Halifax, NS- Today, The Halifax Hurricanes Basketball Club shared their commitment to make the 2016-17 another banner year.

Coming off the heels of the NBL National Championship win last year, the club is using that success to prepare for an even bigger year this year.

"When you win big, that's not the time to get comfortable. That's when you make changes and use your success to get even better," said Jim Mills, Chair - Board of Directors for the Hurricanes.

Two investment areas will be key to the success of the coming season: a new head coach who brings a refreshed perspective and an organization-wide commitment to making the Hurricanes experience the best family offering in the city.

"In 2015-16 we saw that families were our biggest supporters; they carried us to the championship win and we want to be sure we continue to make our offering the undeniable choice for family fun," continued Jim.

Fans, especially families, will see changes in the financial accessibility of the games and the game experience itself.

"We're introducing ticket prices that make it more affordable for families to attend together. We're improving our half-time shows to focus on all-ages entertainment. And we'll be working with our sponsors and partners to offer up more contesting and prizes that all of our guests will enjoy," Mills said.

The Hurricanes new Head Coach and General Manager, Mike Leslie, formerly the Assistant Coach of PEI's Island Storm team, has been a catalyst in shifting the focus of the club.

"We have 20 home games this year and we need to think of each game as a family event that's organized around great professional basketball," Leslie said. "I've seen the impact that's made when a basketball club is entrenched in the community. Making sure the Hurricanes are great community contributors is a key aspect of my personal mandate and vision for this team."

Over the coming weeks, 18 players will participate in training camp to determine the final 12-player team roster. The season officially kicks off on December 26, 2016 with a home opener against the Moncton Miracles.
