Strong Beast Offensive Play Stymied by Goaltending in 6-1 Loss to Mallards

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO-The Brampton Beast executed their game plan of playing relentless and aggressive hockey by pumping 42 shots on the Quad City Mallards' net, but their dynamic goaltender CJ Motte had the answer for all but one in a 6-1 Beast loss at the Powerade Centre on Friday night.
The Beast bounced back from a shaky first period by commanding the last two frames of this affair with a barrage of chances, but Motte nullified this advantage by vexing the Beast's top snipers with big save after big save.
David Pacan proved to be a bright spot for the Beast on this night as he scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season, and produced a high volume of good scoring opportunities for the Beast (8-7-1-2), who were unable to sweep their two-game home series against Mallards (11-17-0-1).
Quad City began the game as a club determined to make up for a tough first period during yesterday's matinee matchup at the Powerade Centre that saw them get outscored 3-0 in the opening period.
Beast goaltender Bryan Pitton had to make multiple acrobatic saves in the opening two minutes of the game to keep the Mallards off the board.
The visitors kept up the pace and broke through for an early opening goal at 5:30 as defenseman Andrew Panzarella beat Pitton by firing home the rebound off of his own snap shot.
Alex Petan expanded the lead to 2-0 at 16:04 by beating Pitton with a perfectly-placed wrist shot.
After trailing 9-2 on the shot clock at one point in the period, the Beast rattled off eight of the last 12 shots to only trail 13-10 heading into the first intermission.
Brampton showed resolve to start the middle stanza of the match by unleashing a cannonade of shots on Motte. Pacan managed to break through by rifling home the rebound of a Garrett Clarke blast from the blueline through the wickets of Motte at 5:47.
Michael Parks squashed the energy that Brampton received from this goal by restoring his team's two-goal advantage just five seconds later at 5:52.
After allowing this quick response, Pitton was pulled from the net in favour of Zach Fucale. Pitton ended his night with 13 saves on 16 shots.
The Mallards struck again just 85 seconds later at 7:17 as Nolan LaPorte deflected the puck from the slot past Fucale.
The Beast had an opportunity to get the momentum back with a power-play chance at the midway point of the period, but the Mallards ultimately came out ahead during this man advantage as Brady Brassart beat Fucale with a shorthanded goal at 10:02.
Brampton continued to fire on the Quad City net from every possible angle on the ice, but were not able to draw any closer before the second intermission. The Beast outshot the Mallards 19-7 in the frame.
This pressure by the Beast continued to start the third period as they registered the first eight shots on net. Quad City did not test Fucale until after the seven-minute mark.
Despite doubling Quad city 13-5 in shots in the final stage of the game, they could not earn another tally to extend their streak of scoring two goals to 19 games.
LaPorte added a late empty net goal in the final minute of the game to make the final score 6-1.
The Beast will attempt to bounce back against the Elmira Jackals on Sunday at the Powerade Centre. This afternoon game begins at 2 p.m. The Beast have won all four games against the Jackals thus far this season.
Notes: The Beast went 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Brampton is 9-for-9 on the PK over the past three games.
