Mavericks Drop Overtime Decision in Fort Wayne

Kansas City Mavericks News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Missouri Mavericks saw a 5-1 third-period lead evaporate on Friday night in Fort Wayne as the Komets claimed a 6-5 overtime win. The loss closed out the season series between the Mavericks and Komets and dropped Missouri's record to 8-9-2 on the season.
The Mavericks and Komets developed some bad blood in back-to-back games in Independence last month and those hard feelings carried over to tonight's contest. Tyler Elbrecht fought Fort Wayne's Cody Sol three seconds into the game and later in the period Jacob Doty picked up a double minor for roughing up Sol in a scrum. The Mavericks, though, cashed in while shorthanded to grab the early lead. Dan Correale worked the right wing on a 2-on-1 and beat the Komets' Garret Bartus for his third goal of the season. Fort Wayne tied it 1:17 later on a point shot by Will Weber that eluded a screened Ville Husso.
Missouri reclaimed its lead 5:23 into the second period with a Rocco Carzo goal on the doorstep. Correale spotted Carzo in front and feathered a pass through traffic to earn his second point of the night with the assist. The goal was Carzo's fifth in his last six games and seventh on the season overall. Husso held the fort from there as he turned aside 14 Komets shots in the frame. The best stop was on a Dan Milan breakaway with just over six minutes left in the period. Milan snuck behind the Mavericks defense at the end of a Komets penalty kill but could not beat Husso five-hole. At the end of the period a slash by Fort Wayne's Trevor Cheek set off a massive scrum where Elbrecht and Sol each picked up double minors for roughing.
The Mavericks roared out of the gate in the third with three goals on four shots over a span of 4:15. Ryan Obuchowski started the barrage by jamming home a loose puck from the edge of the crease, and Jacob Doty sniped a shot past Bartus 26 seconds later for his first of the season. The Komets then took two penalties eight seconds apart and Dane Fox cashed in the 5-on-3 goal to put the Mavericks up by four. The Komets chipped it down to two with goals 1:04 apart by Kyle Follmer and Shawn Szydlowski then tied it with two goals :16 seconds apart in the final minute. Mike Embach and Kyle Thomas provided the goals to force overtime, and Garrett Thompson netted the winner 49 seconds into the extra frame.
Husso shouldered the loss with 41 saves on the night. The Mavericks were 1-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendar! The Mavericks return home on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:05 p.m. to face the Tulsa Oilers. The Mavericks are hosting their annual Star Wars Night featuring Star Wars characters and entertainment from "A Galaxy Far, Far Away." Also, the Mavericks will be giving away commemorative steins to the first 1,500 fans. Groups of 15 or more are eligible for discounted tickets and preferred seating based on availability.
