Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals (5-10-3-0) broke out for five goals in the third period, breaking a 2-2 tie and cruising to a 7-4 win over the Kalamazoo Wings (7-11-0-2) Friday night at First Arena. The win extended the Jackals point streak to a season-high four games (3-0-1-0).
With the Jackals holding their annual Teddy Bear Toss, Elmira wasted little time to get the bears flying. Captain Mike Radja scooped up a puck in the slot and fired one past goalie Joel Martin to ignite the Teddy Bear Toss and give the Jackals a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the first period. The Wings pulled even with a shorthanded goal by Justin Taylor, his fourth goal in two games against the Jackals, at 8:59, sending the game into the first intermission tied at one.
From there the game took a physical turn, with the Jackals logging 23 penalty minutes in the second period. But the Jackals went back ahead 2-1 early in the second, with Radja scoring on a tricky pass from behind the net by Sebastien Sylvestre, which had the goalie going the wrong direction. Radja fired into an open net at 1:32 for his second goal of the night and fourth of the season. The K-Wings responded again as Anthony Camara blasted a 5-on-3 power-play goal from the right circle at 4:22, tying the game at two, which is how the score would hold entering the third.
In the decisive final frame, the teams combined for seven goals in seven minutes, from the 5:41 mark to the 12:51 mark. Kenton Miller started the barrage of goals with his sixth goal of the season, breaking in and beating Martin with a backhand shot. Just 10 seconds later, after Miller hit the post on a breakaway off the ensuing faceoff, Mark Bennett scored on the rebound to make it 4-2 Jackals. Less than three minutes later, Miller scored his second of the night and seventh of the season with a power-play goal from in front of the net, giving Elmira a 5-2 lead.
Kalamazoo made it a two-goal game again at 9:44, with Eric Kattelus roofing a backhand in the slot, pulling within 5-3. Less than a minute later, Vaclav Karabacek picked up his second goal in as many games, but the Wings struck right back 20 seconds later and it was 6-4 Jackals at 10:46. Karabacek finally capped the scoring with his second of the night at 12:51, scoring from the slot with a shot that hit the post then bounced in off Martin. The Jackals would win it, 7-4, giving them wins in three of the last four games.
Notes: Karabacek finished with a game-high four points (2g, 2a), while Radja (2g, 1a) and Miller (2g, 1a) also had multi-point games for the Jackals. Seven goals total and five goals in the third period are both season highs for Elmira. The Jackals scored on three of their first four shots in the third period to break the tie.
