Storm Sink Otters 3-1
December 2, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
With workhorse starter Troy Timpano needing a night off, the Otters turned to longtime backup Jake Lawr against Guelph in their first contest of a three-game road-trip. Dylan Strome had ten points in just three games entering the night, but the high-powered Erie offense was unable to solve Storm goaltender Liam Herbst. They dropped the game 3-1 despite dominating the shot-category 36-22.
Though Erie's Kyle Maksimovich and Ivan Lodnia created several scoring chances early in the period, it was Luke Burghardt who scored the first goal of the game to give Guelph the 1-0 lead. Then, a little over halfway through the first, Isaac Ratcliffe streaked into the zone with the puck; his shot soared over Lawr's shoulder and into the net to increase Guelph's lead further. The Otters were unable to mount any significant offensive pressure for the rest of the period, and they skated off for the first intermission down 2-0.
The second period was scoreless through the first sixteen minutes, with neither team able to generate many scoring chances, but Dylan Strome received a short pass from Alex DeBrincat and slipped the puck beneath Guelph goaltender Liam Herbst at 16:27 of the second. Strome's third goal of the season slashed the Storm's lead to one, but Guelph held on to close out the period up 2-1.
The third period saw numerous penalties called on both teams but no Otters goals. Instead, James McEwan scored an insurance marker for Guelph in the final minutes of the game, and Liam Herbst continued to shut the door. The Otters were unable to score with Lawr pulled for the extra attacker, and they were defeated by the Storm 3-1.
Dylan Strome had the Otters' lone goal, which was assisted by Taylor Raddysh and Alex DeBrincat. In his ninth start of the year, Jake Lawr 19 shots on 22 in the Erie loss.
For Guelph, Luke Burghardt scored a goal, an assist, and added a fight with Erie defenseman Mitch Byrne in the third period to round out his Gordie Howe Hat-trick. Burghardt was forced to drop the gloves with Byrne to answer for an elbow on star goalscorer Alex DeBrincat. Liam Herbst made 35 saves on 36 shots to claim victory for the Storm.
The Otters continue on to their second game of a back-to-back-to-back weekend series as they face the Owen Sound Attack on Saturday, December 3.
