October 28, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (15W-8D-8L) will face Miami FC (9W-10D-12L) in the final match of the 2016 North American Soccer League (NASL) regular season match, 6:00 p.m. MT, October 28 at FIU Stadium in Miami, Florida. Several players will be making their case to join the team's postseason traveling squad versus Indy Eleven, while the team as a whole will be looking to move up the table and finish the season on a high note.
The Eddies are coming off a 1-0 win over Jacksonville Armada FC that featured a last-minute penalty kick conversion off the foot of the club's all-time leading scorer Daryl Fordyce. It was a well-deserved result for the Eddies, who had several opportunities to pull ahead in the match off of chances from midfielders Dustin Corea and Shamit Shome. Between the woodwork, Matt VanOekel earned his league-leading 16th clean sheet of the season, while the team's strong defensive performance earned defender Johann Smith an NASL Team of the Week selection.
Offensively, Fordyce leads the Eddies in goals this season with seven, while teammate Jake Keegan and defender Pape Diakite have contributed five and three goals, respectively. Four other Eddies sit at two goals apiece. The Eddies' defence has been the highlight component to the team's success this year, allowing a league-best 20 goals against in 31 matches.
Miami FC was last handed a 4-0 defeat to Fall Season champion New York Cosmos on October 22 at James M. Shuart Stadium and will be looking to reverse a three-match winless skid against the Eddies. The team has found success against the Edmonton side this season, earning a pair of clean sheet victories. The team's May 28, Spring Season match against the Eddies ended in a 1-0 decision, with Ariel Martinez sending a strike from distance past VanOekel for the lone goal of the contest, snapping a three-game winning streak for the Eddies in the process. Most recently, the team overcame adverse weather conditions on September 11 at Clarke Stadium to capture a 2-0 win.
Dario Cvitanich has led Miami on offence with nine goals to his name, with teammates Kwadwo Poku and Ariel Martinez rounding out the team's top-3 scorers with six goals apiece. 'Keeper Daniel Vega has made all but one start this season for Miami, sporting a 1.35 Goals Against Average (GAA).
"This is a huge game for us on Friday night," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "We know that if we can get the three points against a very good Miami side and if Indy Eleven lose, then we would move into second place. A second-place finish would be fantastic for our little club and that is the incentive for us this week."
FC Edmonton wraps up its NASL regular season this Friday, October 28 against Miami FC at FIU Stadium. Kick-off in the match, which will be streamed live on NASL.com in Canada and the United States, is set for 6:00 p.m. MT. The match will also be broadcast live in the United States on ESPN 3.
