Eagles sweep home stand last weekend Soo Eagles 5, Elliot Lake Wildcats 3 - October 22, 2016

Landon Hubbard tallied twice in the third period, including the game-winner, to help lead the Soo Eagles to a 5-3 victory over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action in front of 618 fans at Pullar Stadium.

Brendan Schultz started Sault Ste. Marie off in a positive manner as he collected his ninth of the campaign six minutes into the contest.

The power play allowed Elliot Lake to tie it at 14:20 as Jacob Kelly picked up his second of the season.

Each side would score twice in the middle session to make it 3-3 as David Elford and Mack Caruana supplied man advantage markers for the Wildcats while Rhett Rampinelli at even strength and Adam Ostrowski, on the power play, for his first NOJHL goal countered for the Eagles.

Up a man Hubbard provided the eventual difference maker at 7:21 of the third and he then added some insurance in the final two minutes to round out the scoring.

Hayden Winch and William Casey both dished out two assists apiece to aid the winners' cause.

Kade Phipps made 32 saves to register his second straight win for the Soo.

Justin Richer meanwhile faced 43 shots in defeat in net for Elliot Lake.

Soo Eagles 11, Espanola Express 2 - October 21, 2016

Bradley Hofelich scored three times and set-up two others while Chris Murphy doled out five assists to aid the Soo Eagles in thumping the Espanola Express 11-2 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Pullar Stadium.

The Eagles set the tone early in this one grabbing a 4-0 lead after one period of play thanks to a pair of markers from Hofelich and singles from Jacob Palmerio and Chris Lutz.

The onslaught continued in the middle stanza as Sault Ste. Marie outscored Espanola 6-1 in the session to go up by nine entering the third.

Jake Saxton had a pair of markers for the Soo with Nolan Makkonen, Brendan Schultz, Landon Hubbard and Hofelich also getting into the act.

Nate Viberg had the lone Express marker in the frame, which came via the power play.

The two sides then traded goals in the third to round things out offensively with William Casey scoring for the Eagles and Riley Smith for Espanola.

The Soo outshot the Express 58-28 on the night with Kade Phipps earning the victory in his NOJHL debut while Kyle Alaverdy suffered the defeat.

Eagles claim a pair of weekly honors The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that a pair of Soo Eagles in goaltender Kade Phipps and forward Chris Murphy along with Kirkland Lake Gold Miners forward Alex Storjohann have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Oct. 23.

KADE PHIPPS, (G) SOO EAGLES - The recently acquired Phipps impressed in his NOJHL debut as he won his first two starts helping the Eagles secure four points in the overall standings.

The 18-year-old Perrysburg, Ohio product began his tenure in the Soo Friday making 26 stops on 28 shots helping his side earn a victory over visiting Espanola.

One night later he registered his second straight league triumph as he made 32 saves in an Eagles victory over Elliot Lake.

CHRIS MURPHY, (F) SOO EAGLES - Murphy set the tone for the Michigan Soo squad Friday as he piled up a career single-game high five assists as the Eagles soared past the Express at Pullar Stadium.

The 20-year from Livonia, Mich., then helped set-up the game-winner Saturday as Sault Ste. Marie skated to the decision over the Wildcats.

Murphy currently leads the Eagles in offensive production amassing 26 points in 17 games on 10 goals and 16 assists.

His totals also put him in a tie for second overall in NOJHL scoring.
