San Diego Gulls Rally to 5-4 Win over Texas Stars

SAN DIEGO - San Diego scored two goals 23 seconds apart late in the third period to rally back for a 5-4 win over the Texas Stars in front of 8,391 fans at Valley View Casino Center.

Antoine Laganiere tied the game at 4-4 midway through the third period and Stu Bickel scored the game-winning goal by deflecting Brandon Montour's point shot at 11:09 of the final frame to nullify a Texas comeback in the third period.

San Diego scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the third, with Kevin Roy, Brandon Montour and Nick Tarnasky each scoring their first goals of the season, only to see Texas come out and take the lead in the third.

For the second-straight night, Texas cut a third period deficit with a late rally only to give up the lead and leave empty-handed. The Stars scored three unanswered third period goals in a span of 4:45 to take a 4-3 lead, but that lead lasted only 90 seconds before Laganiere tied the score.

Kevin Roy scored his first professional goal and recorded his first multi-point contest (1-12), netting his first career goal on the power play. Roy received a pass through the slot from Corey Tropp at 11:52 of the first period, that split the Stars' penalty killers and Roy snapped a quick shot past Texas goaltender Philippe Desrosiers.

Brandon Montour gave the Gulls their first lead of the game late in the second period with a slap shot from the top of the half wall at 3:05 of the second period. Nick Tarnasky extended the lead to 3-1 only 1:21 after Montour's marker from a shot between the circles that beat Desrosiers. Texas defenseman Matt Mangene recorded his first goal of the season on the power play at 7:21 of the first period to give the Stars an early lead.

In the third period, Stars left wing Cole Ully cut the Gulls lead to 3-2 early in the third period with the Stars' second power play goal of the game, followed by goals from Remi Elie and Bradon Defazio to give the Stars the lead prior to San Diego's 23-second thrilling comeback.

Arriving in San Diego from Anaheim earlier in the day, defenseman Jacob Larsson and right wing Nick Sorensen recorded their first-career American Hockey League (AHL) points. Larsson collected his first career professional point on Roy's opening goal, while Sorensen added an assist on Tarnasky's marker in the second period. Sorensen recorded his first career National Hockey League (NHL) assist with the Ducks on Thursday night in Philadelphia, helping Anaheim to a 3-2 win over the Flyers.

Adding two assists tonight, Tropp leads all Gulls skaters with 1-45 points through the team's first three games. Montour collected his second multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist, taking his season total to 1-34 points.

Jaycob Megna recorded his first points of the season, collecting an assist on Montour's goal in the second period, and picking up a helper on Stu Bickel's game-winning goal.

Gulls goaltender Dustin Tokarski picked up his second-consecutive win (2-0-0-0) to open the season, stopping 25-of-29 shots in the victory. Desrosiers stopped 33 of the Gulls' 38 shots direct at his net, picking up his first loss of the season (0-1-0-0)

Texas falls to (2-2-1-0) on the season and finishes their first trip to California without a win (0-2-1-0).

Note: The Stars' first two goals came on the power play, with San Diego's first seven goals against on the season coming from the opposing team's power play.

San Diego closes out a season-opening four-game home stand when they face the Stockton Heat at Valley View Casino Center on Wednesday, Oct. 26 (7 p.m.).
