Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RVA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels and the Eastern League of Professional Baseball are proud to announce that the Squirrels organization has once again been nominated for Minor League Baseball's annual John Henry Moss Community Service Award. The award is the highest community honor bestowed by MILB and is given to one team each year that demonstrates an outstanding, on-going commitment to charitable service, support and leadership within the community. This is the third consecutive season the Squirrels have earned the nomination, with each league within MILB allowed just one nominee. The winner of the John Henry Moss Community Service Award is selected by Minor League Baseball and will be honored at the Baseball Winter Meetings December 4-8 in Washington, DC. "I'm proud that the Flying Squirrels have been nominated for this award for the 3rd consecutive year," said Flying Squirrels President and Managing General Partner Lou DiBella. "It reflects our continuing mission to be the best neighbor and corporate citizen that we can be. I'm grateful for the hard work of our front office staff, and for the assistance of our players and the San Francisco Giants organization, as we continue to evidence our commitment to the greater Richmond community."

The Flying Squirrels earned the nomination due to their ongoing dedication to the Richmond community. The Squirrels raised nearly $330,000 in donations and gifts in kind for over 800 organizations in 2016. That was in addition to executives, players, coaches and mascots making over 700 appearances within the community. The Squirrels have continued to facilitate a number of successful community programs and events while also adding new partnerships and initiatives in 2016. Community initiatives include: Go Nutz for Reading Program, Flying Squirrels Art Contest, Score an A Ticket Program, United Health Care Home Run for Life, Camp Warrior, RAMPS Build, ASK Foundation Night, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Jersey Auctions and more. "As Mr. Moss was a close friend and mentor to me personally, being nominated for this means a lot," said Squirrels VP & COO Todd "Parney" Parnell. "Being nominated once again also reaffirms that due to the overwhelming commitment of our ownership and front office staff the words 'Flying Squirrels' and community are synonymous in Richmond "

Additionally, the Flying Squirrels along with Flying Squirrels Charities and Barton Malow continue to make progress on the Renovating Richmond's Recreation Program. The program is a dedicated community project to renovate 16 youth baseball facilities in the city that began in 2014. Additional details on Renovating Richmond's Recreation can be found here.

The John Henry Moss Community Service Award is named after the longtime, former South Atlantic League president who founded the circuit and presided over it for a half-century from 1959-2008. The Flying Squirrels 2017 season begins on April 6th at The Diamond. Season tickets for the 2017 season are available by contacting the front office at 804-359-FUNN.
