Seattle Reign FC News Release

SEATTLE - The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) announced Seattle Reign FC forward Manon Melis is the NWSL Player of the Week for Week 16 of the 2016 NWSL season.

Melis scored two goals in Reign FC's first match back after the Olympic break, to help Seattle earn a 3-1 victory over Portland Thorns FC. The forward's brace helped Reign FC earn its first victory over rival Thorns FC this season, and its fifth win at home.

The forward opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Nahomi Kawasumi played the ball forward, splitting two Thorns defenders and hitting a sprinting Melis in stride. Melis was then able to chip the ball over goalkeeper Michelle Betos for her first career goal against Portland.

Melis' first-half goal ensured that Reign FC went into the half leading Thorns FC for the first time this season.

Five minutes into the second half, Melis doubled Reign FC's lead. Melis was able to pounce on a miscue by the Thorns defense and found herself 1v1 with Betos. The forward put it into the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon.

This marks the 13th time a member of Seattle Reign FC has been named Player of the Week, and the first time that Melis has been honored with the award.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of media members that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.

Reign FC (6-5-5, 23 pts) head to Toyota Park to play the Chicago Red Stars (8-4-4 28 pts) on Sunday, September 4th at 4:00 p.m. PT. The game will be live-streamed on the NWSL's official YouTube channel and can be watched at youtube.com/nwsl.
