A league-high-tying 23 hits helped propel the Modesto Nuts to a 12-2 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday night at The Diamond to push their season-high winning streak to five games.
With the Nuts (31-33; 57-77) and Blaze winning Tuesday, the Nuts remain four games back in the second half standings with six games to play. The Nuts' elimination number is one.
Things got started quickly when the Nuts plated four runs in the first to knock Storm (33-31; 65-69) starter Dylan Stoops (L, 0-1) out of the ball game after he recorded just two hits and faced nine hitters. Wes Rogers scored on a throwing error. Forrest Wall came to the plate after a wild pitch. Dom Nunez and Max White each delivered RBI singles.
In the fourth, the Nuts busted things wide open with seven straight hits. Corey Kimber had entered the game with two outs in the first and retired the first eight batters he faced until Luis Jean smacked a one-out single in the fourth to begin the hit parade. Forrest Wall had a RBI single. Josh Fuentes drove in a run with one of his three hits. Shane Hoelscher roped the first of his two doubles. He finished with three RBI and four hits in his last four at-bats. Yonathon Daza smacked a two-run double to cap the inning.
Meanwhile, Helmis Rodriguez (W, 4-9) cruised. He worked seven frames allowing five hits and no runs. The southpaw worked around three errors while walking two and striking out six. In his last three starts, spanning 22 innings, Rodirguez has allowed just three runs.
All nine starters recorded a hit and reached multiple times. Eight of the starting nine had at least two hits. The 23 hits are a season-high for the Nuts and match the most in a single game in the California League done two other times by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and the Lancaster JetHawks.
