Clippers Get Back On Winning Track With 4-1 Win
August 30, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
Following in the footsteps of an outstanding performance from Shawn Haviland, Columbus southpaw Ryan Merritt (11-7) was very good for the Clippers (79-57) on Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park, as he only surrendered one run in a 4-1 win in the season series finale against division rival Louisville (65-70).
Just as they did in yesterday's affair with the Bats, the dynamic duo of Erik Gonzalez and Yandy Diaz went to work immediately in the bottom of the first, as Diaz's fielder's choice groundout to second base brought home Gonzalez from third after a leadoff double and a balk.
An RBI sacrifice fly to deep center from Bats catcher Kyle Skipworth with the bases loaded tied the game at one in the second.
Columbus would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth via an RBI double from Gonzalez and a two run base hit from Diaz the next at bat, giving the Clippers a 4-1 lead and the eventual win.
Gonzalez ended his day going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Diaz finished up 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
The game was called with two outs in the top of the eighth inning due to rain.
Right hander Rookie Davis (0-2) took the loss for Louisville, working five innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits while walking one and fanning two.
Shawn Armstrong earned the save for Columbus, his 10th of the year.
The Clippers will now hit the road for a few days, a three game series at Durham to take on the Bulls before returning to Huntington Park to face their in-state rival Toledo on Thursday night. It will be another five dollar brewfest night at the ballpark! ALL 14 oz. draft beer, both craft and domestic, are just five dollars all game long!
Hey fans, the drive for 600,000 is ON! If the Clippers reach 600,000 in paid attendance at Huntington Park this season, then YOU can catch the back to back to back International League West Division Champions in the playoffs for FREE. Get your tickets for the remaining three home games today!
