KEIZER, Oregon - Having dropped the first two games of the series against the Eugene Emeralds (49-19), the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (29-39) were unable thwart off a sweep attempt by the visitors dropping the game 6-5.

Salem-Keizer jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when shortstop Ryan Howard hit a solo blast to left-center field. Howard then hit a single in the fourth inning, the teams second hit of the game.

The lead lasted but one inning as the Emeralds got a run back via a slew of singles in the fourth inning.

That was the only run allowed by Volcanoes starting pitchr Mac Marshall, who went strong 6.0 innings, while striking out eight batters and walking just two.

In the sixth inning, third baseman Manuel Geraldo came around to score by capitalizing on multiple Eugene miscues. After Geraldo took second on a wild pitch, he got moved over to third on a fly out and then scored on a wild pitch to retake the lead for the Volcanoes.

Victor Concepcion came in for Marshall in the seventh and the Emeralds' Kevonte Mitchell hit a solo shot to leadoff the inning and tie the ballgame 2-2. With two outs in the inning shortstop Yeiler Peguero doubled to break the tie and brought home right fielder Jose Gonzalez to make the score 3-2.

The Emeralds added to their lead, tacking on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 5-2 lead when catcher Tyler Payne hit a two-run home run to left field. Eugene then tacked on one more as center fielder D.J. Wilson tripled to scored Gonzalez, his second run scored of the game.

The Volcanoes got a run back in the bottom half of the frame when left fielder Gio Brusa hit his tenth home run of the season to cut the lead to 6-3.

With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, the Volcanoes started to put together a comeback via a two-out single by Geraldo to score Howard. A wild pitch with center fielder Ashford Fulmer batting allowed first baseman Ryan Kirby to score and bring Eugene's lead to just one run in the ninth. Fulmer would end up walking to lead the bases.

The two-out ninth inning rally came up short with the bases loaded as the Volcanoes fell to the Emeralds 6-5.

The Volcanoes drop to 29-in-39 with the loss and will travel to Vancouver, B.C. to play the Canadians in a five-game series, starting on August 29. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
