Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - Hunter Bonifacio punched a grand slam to left in the first inning and the Omaha Storm Chasers (57-76) rolled over the Iowa Cubs (62-73) 7-2 Sunday afternoon at Principal Park. Hunter Dozier helped the effort, going 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Omaha took control in the first with the grand slam from Bonifacio off Iowa starter Stephen Fife. Iowa came right back and loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the frame, but came up empty to keep the four-run deficit.

Including the first, Alec Mills locked in and retired 15 straight batters. Fife didn't have the same luck as Dozier and Irving Falu each tagged a double in the third to plate another run for Omaha. Dozier came through again with a two-RBI double in the fourth put the out of towners up 7-0 and chase Fife from the game.

Giovanni Soto took over for Iowa in the fifth and contributed two scoreless innings while whiffing four.

Iowa got its first baserunner in five innings with a John Andreoli single in the sixth, but the Storm Chasers shut down the effort to keep the shutout intact. The bullpen took over from there and had pitched 2.2 scoreless frames before Iowa made a run in the ninth.

Jeimer Candelario poked a single through the right side and came around to score on a double from Tim Federowicz. He was able to score on a booted ground ball to Ramon Torres to give Iowa its second run of the game. A soft pop out to shortstop by Bijan Rademacher ended the comeback attempt and put the game in the books.

Mills (4-3) tossed six scoreless frames and limited Iowa to three hits, walked one and struck out two to earn the win. Fife (0-2) collected the loss with seven earned runs allowed over four innings.

Iowa travels to Nashville to take on the Sounds four the final road trip of the season. The four-game series kicks off with a 7:05 first pitch Monday. Listen live on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
