16 in '16: PawSox Set Record with 6-0 Shutout of Syracuse

August 28, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

Syracuse, NY- Led by Roenis Elias and Rusney Castillo, the Pawtucket Red Sox made franchise history on Sunday afternoon in central New York with a 6-0 defeat of the Syracuse Chiefs. The shutout was Pawtucket's 16th of the season and moved the club past the 1977 PawSox for the team record.

Elias (10-5) hurled six scoreless innings in which he allowed only three hits and struck out six as the PawSox pounded a trio of Syracuse hurlers. He recorded his team-leading tenth victory of the season.

Joe Ross (0-2) made a rehab start for the Chiefs and yielded the game's first run; after singles from Castillo, Christian Vazquez and Chris Marrero (who smashed a ball to the warning track in center), Jantzen Witte plated Castillo with a grounder to short.

Aaron Laffey relieved Ross in the second and allowed four runs on eight hits, three of which came in consecutive at-bats from Deven Marrero. Chris Marrero plated Vazquez with a third-inning double that somehow came back into play off the top of the centerfield wall. Witte then singled to right to push Pawtucket ahead, 3-0.

A Castillo double and a sacrifice fly from Ryan LaMarre scored Deven Marrero and Mike Miller, who had doubled and walked to open the fourth.

In the sixth, Castillo tripled off the absolute top of the right-field wall and scored on Lamarre's sacrifice fly to right off of Erik Davis, the third Syracuse pitcher.

Vazquez and Chris Dominguez each had a pair of hits while Allen Craig was robbed of hits in each of his five at-bats.

William Cuevas pitched a pair of scoreless frames and Joe Kelly retired the Chiefs in the ninth.

The PawSox conclude their four-game series with the Chiefs tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Pawtucket righthander Sean O'Sullivan (7-6, 4.42) is scheduled to make the start against Syracuse righty Taylor Hill (6-11, 4.70). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network begins at 6:05 p.m.

Pawtucket returns home for the season's final five-game homestand on Thursday. Good seats for those contests against the Syracuse Chiefs and the Buffalo Bisons are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office; call (401) 724-7300 or visit pawsox.com to get your tickets today.
